Happy Sunday Funday! Despite it being smokey, we are enjoying the last beautiful walks of summer.
If we have to do private consults outdoors this is the view to do it in. Note all consults with social distancing are outdoors for the meantime and weather dependent.
A great way to end a busy week. Spent some time with Cooper tonight. He has been working on his reactivity the past year and we did a follow up session. I'm not surprised he did amazing with how commited his family is. Good to see you handsome boy

As a dog guardian it is important to me to ensure their lives all fulfilled. One way to do this is to allow natural dog behaviours. Take that time to stop and let them sniff on their walks.

Have a super long weekend!
Have a counter surfer? The first step is to ensure there is nothing accessible on the counter to grab, this is very reinforcing for our dogs. Keep it all put away while training. Ensure your dog is not practicing this while you are away, again keep everything enticing put away or block access to the area. Teach them a more appropriate and polite alternative skill. If we don't teach them what we would rather them do, they wont learn! A down stay or place cue are good options for this. Reward these often, the more these are reinforced more your dog will offer them.

https://www.facebook.com/136450056440896/posts/3186600268092511/ "Barking is part of the dog's language, of course, and we are responsible for having selected for barking in the dogs we live with. This is an interesting response by Marc Bekoff to an article posted earlier by Stanley Coren which has since been removed from the Psychology Today site. In that article, for example, one solution for excessive barking was to clap one's hand below the dog's jaw punitively. Even though the original article is now gone (no doubt because it caused some blowback), Dr. Bekoff's response is important, and I hope can be read and shared. I love the view that stopping all barking is, in a way, stripping the dog of his emotion."

A client was impressed with my Kong holster so she got creative and made her own. She's also prepared with all the right tools to reward her puppy for behaviours we are reinforcing to continue such as being calm to pass other dogs instead of lunging towards them. Betty is 5 months and becomes over stimulated on walks quickly. When this happens she redirects this onto her person with jumping, biting and growling. We are using the Kong in these circumstances to redirect her t...o another outlet and have her start using that brain again. We are keeping her walks shorter, ensuring she has more distance from her triggers, and providing more brain games on walks right now such as find it, tricks and urban agility. It's important to know your dogs triggers, what gets them excited? scared? frustrated? aroused? Experiencing all of these on a walk can stack up to the point our dogs are unable to handle and cause that redirection onto their person. See more
#Trainingtip Does your dog jump to greet you or guests? It's their way of saying "Hi, I'm excited to see you, can I lick your face?!" Teach them an alternate behaviour to be rewarded for in place of jumping such as a sit for more polite greetings.
Pre made some lunch time snacks while I'm in meetings. Lickimat and Kong with natural peanut butter. Added the leftover dust from freeze dried beef liver treats and a few sardines for extra fun. What are your dogs snacks?
Dropping a little hint of what's coming in September. Calling all puppies for socialization
Wondering how to stop your dog from barking and lunging on walks? 1. Find a novel food - something your dog has never had but is likely to absolutely LOVE. 2. Cut the treats into bite-sized pieces no larger than an M&M. Put them in an easy-to-get-to container like a bait bag, an old fanny pack, or an apron pocket. 3. Begin happy-talking and feeding your dog as soon as they notice the trigger from a safe distance.... 4. Continue treating your dog at a rate of about one treat per second for as long as the trigger is present. 5. The moment the trigger disappears, you abruptly stop the stream of treats and happy talk and go on your disappointed way. 6. Repeat the process every time your dog notices the trigger. Be mindful of the order of events. The trigger must be noticed before the happy-talk and food starts so that the trigger predicts the good stuff and not the other way around! House Training 1-2-3 1- Management in place to prevent attempts indoors. Crates, umbilical cord, and never left alone to have an accident. 2- Timing is important of accompanying your puppy outdoors armed with treats and reward just as they finish every single time. ... 3- After 1 and 2 have been in place for at least 3 weeks loosen up management and interrupt/redirect. Late punishment - Anything more than a couple seconds is ineffective. Rubbing noses in it or scolding can cause fear and does not tell the puppy they aren't supposed to pee in the house. Now they have learn't to not pee in front of you out of fear.
Enjoy your long sunny weekend!
It's a hot week out there, if you need to go out leave your dogs at home. The Humane Society is receiving more calls than they should about this, leaving a dog in a hot car is illegal including seizure of animal, charges even jail time. https://www.facebook.com//a.12948066709/4294120120629135/
Working on eye contact or offered attention is extremely beneficial for all sorts of areas of training. Improves overall focus while in various environments while your dog is engaged with you. Builds your relationship between you and your dog. Improves recall.... Improves attention and check ins while loose leash walking. Is an alternate behaviour to pulling or reacting on leash. Start by capturing the behaviour - Every time your dog or puppy offers you any eye contact mark and reward it, the more you reinforce this behaviour the more your dog will offer it. Use a portion of their meals - Wait without prompting them for any eye contact - as soon as they look at you mark and drop the kibble on the floor to reward and break the eye contact - Repeat - Move to different environments - in your kitchen, backyard, front step and on walks.
It's Friday! Sound on for this cutie https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10223273095560604&id=1381036958
