A thank you to those who can’t stay home Today we have Dr. David nominated by @barbarakaye and his wife Debbie. ... Debbie let us know that though her husband mentions his duties below he is affectionately nicknamed Superman and he loves to hear to noise at 7:30pm if he happens to be home. They are often eating dinner at midnight when he finishes his day and has finished answering patients requests. He is constantly asked why don’t you slow down?! But she said it’s simple, he loves being a Doctor because he can help. I have a busy family practice in Brampton and have been working in the ER department at William Osler hospital for 30 years. I have seen a lot in that time and the hour commute each way after many hours in the hospital gives me time to process the shift. One thing for sure is that it takes team work. Each of my colleagues has a part to play. With their continuing dedication and being able to anticipate the next critical situation to arise we do our best to help everyone we can. We are learning everyday and are hopeful the answers will come soon. No one can save the world alone but we can all make a difference. There are many long days but I am always ready to go and help where I am needed. Protecting the most vulnerable in our society is our most important goal. Please continue to exercise precautions. A thank you to those who can’t stay home Today we have our friends at Sunrise of Oakville nominated by @sheaashleylove ! ... I would like to nominate the entire team of Sunrise of Oakville as Healthcare Hero's!!! Our team has gone above and beyond since day one ensuring that our residents stay happy, healthy and well cared for. Our dedicated team of support workers and coordinators, etc. come in every day with a smile on their faces ready to take on whatever the day throws at them. With the ever changing policies and province wide mandated regulations, we are all adapting well and moving through this fluid situation with a continued positive outlook. We understand that families and residents not having the ability to see their loved ones is a challenge, but we have been setting up a lot of FaceTime, Skype, picture exchanges, and window visits to ensure our residents still feel connected. We have even celebrated special milestone this way as well, such as 100th Birthdays and the notice of a new grandchild on the way! These are certainly challenging times to say the least, but I have never felt so grateful to work for a team that cares so much about putting our residents FIRST and ensuring our residents know we are here for them, they are loved and that we will all get through this together. A thank you to those who can’t stay home Next up is @misslinacorda Lina works in the ER at Grand River Hospital.... I work in a busy emergency department... I understand whole heartedly how difficult this has been; mixed emotions, continuous plan changes, and worry and uncertainty. But even amongst the uncertainty nurses and healthcare workers continue to perform selfless acts. Every day we show up. We put on a clean pair of scrubs, we stand by our patients with our colleagues and we put the needs of others before our own. Every day on my way to work in my community the side walks are filled with encouraging and supportive messages. These messages fill me and my colleagues with hope and they continue to drive our spirits. I hope that during this time of uncertainty we as a society continue to let kindness and compassion lead us. We are in this together. Nursing chose me and even through the ups and downs I wouldn’t choose anything else. I am proud to be a nurse Thank you Lina, such an inspiring message. #thankshealthheroes

A thank you to those who can’t stay home Today we recognize Vilija @seselcat. She is a Respiratory Therapist at OTMH and a Mom of two. ... In short, that means we work closely with COVID patients at all stages of their illness, ensuring their respiratory needs are met. This includes intubation (inserting the breathing tube), managing them on the ventilator (often known as life support), and responding to emergencies hospital wide. It’s been tough! Balancing high stress time at work while managing family life with two young kids at home has been a challenge. There are good days and downright horrible days. We’re lucky to have an incredible team here and we can all lean in on each other. Then there’s the constant outpouring of support from our families, friends, and the community - we’re feeling the love to say the least. We are all in this together here and the only way to go is straight through it. I think we’re all proud to be doing our part and are thankful to those doing their part by staying home. Thank you @seselcat for your incredible courage. We appreciate you continuing to show up and cannot thank you enough.

A thank you to those who can’t stay home Today we have @davidryan1304 who was nominated by his wife @shannalepine... Ryan works at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital in the ICU. Ryan is a very positive and hard working individual but when talking with him over the last few weeks he admits the energy in the hospital has changed. Everyone is taking all the proper precautions in helping all the patients while making sure they all stay healthy to remain on the front line. Ryan showers and changes at the hospital but continues the safety measures at home. He leaves everything in his garage and showers on the ground floor of this house before going up to his family. We had the pleasure of Ryan working for us while he was wrapping up school and he is incredible with patients and co-workers. He is smart, hardworking, but extremely kind and optimistic. A thank you to those who can’t stay home Next up is the winner of our first draw last week. This is @ashleyrunci She is an RN at the Oakville Hospital Emergency Department. This is her and her team. Here is what she had to say when we were discussing the current situation...... I have been an RN for 7 years and this has been the scariest time throughout my career. Each shift we are screened at the door for any symptoms, each shift we have limited supply of PPE, and each shift we wonder what the day will bring. The mood around the hospital has changed, visitors are restricted and tensions can be high. We are looking after sick patients but also remembering to take precautions to keep ourselves safe. What helps me get through my shift is the team I work with. I think many of us would agree that we couldn’t do what we do without our fearless co-workers. I could not be prouder to be part of this team. I also have to give a shoutout to my family for always checking in and making sure I am safe! Lastly, to my husband who is a firefighter and is working through this as well! Over the last weeks we have seen an overwhelming amount of community support that we will be forever grateful for. Remember to be thankful for each day and let’s get through this together! Ashley thank you for everything. In talking with you, all you wanted to do is praise your team and others. A thank to those who can’t stay home First up this week is @jharmina. Jasmine works at Halton Healthcare - Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with the department of Professional Practice and Infection, Prevention and Control.... Jasmine and the IP&C team have been working like crazy since January on making sure that hospital staff, physicians, and patients are protected from COVID-19. Here is a little bit of an update from Jasmine: I have been a part of Halton Healthcare’s Emergency Operation Center, which is responsible for carrying our emergency preparedness decision making and strategies during our current Infection Control emergency. We meet for a total of 2 hours per day (including weekends!) and discuss any issues that arise at all 3 of our hospital sites, any updates or directives from the Ministry of Health, and we make sure everything is up to date with best practice in the hospital. I am proud to be a part of such an important team during the Pandemic. For those at home: you play an important role too! Stay home, stay healthy, and stay positive. Take each day by day and accept some days will be better than others. Wash your hands and please limit your interactions with others as much as possible. We will get through this together and everyone plays a part in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Thank you so much Jasmine. You remind us that there are so many people behind the scenes helping us fight this battle. More importantly, thank you for all your hard work in keeping us safe.

Many of us are dealing with loneliness, stress, and anxiety during this difficult time. Here are a few tips we found on CAMH.ca to help: 1. Stay busy Make a schedule for your day We found it helpful to make a consistent schedule Monday Friday. It helps break up the week so everyday doesn’t feel the same... 2. Social interaction Find ways to stay connected, phone calls, video conferencing, texting, emailing etc. We are also sending care packages or letters and notes 3. Self-care Don’t forget to eat health and drink lots of water There are a ton of free work out videos, from yoga, to weight training, to even dance/cardio videos Have Baths, put on your face-masks, etc. Relax and meditate 4. Stay organized and prepare ahead Many grocery stores have online delivery but it’s usually about a week. Be prepared, make lists and stock up for a week or 2 at a time Make lists of things you want to accomplish each week. It can be work related or maybe things you need to get done around the home. Maybe it’s a personal goal you haven’t had time to focus on. Remember we are all in this together. Vicki worked with us for roughly two years, before she decided to hop in an RV with her pup and boyfriend and travel across Canada. She was an RN at Joseph Brant Hospital but has now taken a contract position in Abbotsford, BC. ... In catching up with Vicki she let us know she is living alone in an apartment away from her family and pup but said she is still one of the lucky ones. She said Moms and Dads are staying away from their kids and living in basements to protect their families. She explained that her and her colleagues are all going home to no one or having to isolate at a time when everyone feels they need their support system the most. That being said she encouraged us all to keep showing our support from home.. Continue the 7pm cheers, decorate front windows with colourful and positive messages, make well thought out plans for trips to the stores - and if you wear gloves inside grocery stores THROW THEM OUT & HAND SANITIZE before entering your car!- Vicki Thank you Vicki, we miss you, support you, and are here for you. @ Abbotsford, British Columbia
