The OSFI has made the official announcment of the stress test increase to uninsured mortgages effective June 1st, to 5.25%. The federal government decided to also apply this increased stress test rate to insured mortgages as well. For anyone with a pre-approval, you should check in with your broker or lender to see if this change is impacting how you qualify. With today’s official confirmation from OSFI of the new minimum qualifying rate for uninsured mortgages, the federal... government will align with OSFI by establishing a new minimum qualifying rate for insured mortgages, subject to review and periodic adjustment, which will be the greater of the borrower’s mortgage contract rate plus 2 per cent, or 5.25 per cent. In summary, the Bank noted The Governing Council will hold the policy interest rate at the effective lower bound until economic slack is absorbed so that the 2 percent inflation target is sustainably achieved.
