Heard the new neighbours moving in during the wee hours of the morning. Their lights are bright, their engines are loud and run around the clock, and the rules to monitor them for invasive species are unenforceable and often overlooked. Did you know that between 2009 and 2018 we’ve seen marine traffic explode from 23 ships to 287 ships. That’s a 64% increase. This is not sustainable! The majority of the ships are transporting American coal and grain and do not bring any natio...nal consumer goods. So where exactly is the economic benefit? These international ships anchor for free. For free ! Thanks to the plummeting global market affected by international trade wars, the result is these ships waiting longer for contracts. But because of the lack of available port space, they’re utilizing the waters of our Souther Gulf Islands (aka home to many endangered species and an extremely volatile marine ecosystem! Uggghhhhhhhh!!!!!) Transport Canada is responsible for regulating these ships and ensuring that they do not discharge bilge water and other pollutants. Guess what I’m watching pour out the side as I type this? You’ve got it, bilge water (an alarming volume, might I add). Where are you at Transport Canada?!? How long will this ship be anchored here? Who know! 6, 8 weeks? How many more will come? Unknown. This is a core corridor for marine life of all species! Please, we are playing with fire here @transportcanada Safe to say it’ll be awhile before we see our whales again as heavy marine traffic season is upon us :(. Update: in the short time it took me to write this, a third ship has arrived. Ship #1 SEA FUTURE: a massive 229m bulk carrier from the Marshall Islands, destination Roberts Bank, California, USA.
