Sally's Garden - Tomato Seed Saving Save the seeds, save the world Most plants want to reproduce their species;... Like a pack of horned-up twenty-somethings They are quite willing for any opportunity Seeds want to grow Saving seeds from tomatoes includes an extra step that most vegetables and flowers don’t require You know that little gel pack that surrounds each seed? You need to eliminate that for success First, know the name of each tomato you want to save * Find a really good specimen in prime season Don’t leave it for the last gasp in late fall Label a small jar with the name of each type of tomato Pro tip: Do this FIRST rather than thinking "oh I will remember" Fill the jar about half full of water Cut the tomato Scoop out the seeds Add seeds to the water in the jar Consume tomato (the best part) Leave all the jars in a room; 4 to 5 days No direct sunlight Stir or shake occasionally In a few days the water will develop a scum on top That scum is good You want that fermentation process The good seeds sink to the bottom Everything else floats to the top along with debris Scoop out the junk into the compost Pour the good stuff through a sieve over the sink and rinse thoroughly If bits of pulp remain, pick them out Put seeds on a plate or shallow bowl Spread out (in good air circulation but not direct sunlight) Air dry for longer than you think is necessary That's it Store your seeds carefully in a paper envelope Mark with variety’s name and date Store the seeds where they will stay dry and a bit cool This wisdom is courtesy of our neighbour Mayo Underwood from Underwood Gardens Thank you for helping to keep the gardens growing Thank you for saving your seeds *** Extra info: Seeds saved from open-pollinated or heirloom tomatoes are the only ones that will produce offspring like their parents Hybrids won’t Unsure what "open pollinated" or "heirloom" means... That's ok, send a private message to Sally . . . #randomactsofgreen #SallysGarden #Tomato #Seeds #Gardening #VictoryGardens
