Q: It’s back to school! What shoes should my child be wearing? A: With COVID considerations, it can be easy to forget about the feet! When going back to schoo...l, having the proper shoes can help prevent pain from developing. There are a couple key considerations when looking for the proper shoes for you children: proper fit and proper support. When fitting shoes for a growing child, it is common for parents to buy shoes larger to help them last longer. Although, if the shoe is too large, this may can cause trips and falls. To fit the length, there should be about 1/2 or a thumb width from the end of the toe to the end of the shoe. If the shoe fit is significantly longer than this, it is too long. To find the proper support, there are a couple tests to perform. First, try and bend the middle of the shoe in half. The shoe should be solid and resist the force from your hands. The second test is to push the back of the heel to test the heel counter. This heel counter should be solid and resist the pressure from your thumb. Often an indoor and outdoor shoe may be required. If there is a situation preventing good support for both the indoor and outdoor shoe, consider which one your child is wearing most often. Use the more supportive shoe for the most used shoe. Something to consider are the activities being done while indoor versus outdoor. They may be wearing the indoor shoes more often, but outdoors physically on their feet more often. Canadian Certified Pedorthists can help you find the right fit and get the right shoe for your child’s feet. To find a pedorthist near you visit www.pedorthic.ca/ See more

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy at home. While you are physical distancing, take time to care for your feet. If you’re finding your feet are more s...ore than normal, consider wearing shoes (with your orthotics if you wear them) in your house so your feet get the support they’re used to all day long. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, a common heel problem, this archived video shows suggested stretches to help alleviate discomfort. https://www.pedorthic.ca/videos/plantar-fasciitis/ See more

Foot Fact/FAQ Friday Q: My doctor told me the pain in my heel is probably PLANTAR FASCIITIS. What do I do now? A: The good news is that plantar fasciitis (and o...ther conditions that produce painful symptoms in the same area of the foot) is treatable and it will get better. The downside? Sometimes it can take longer to resolve than you want it to so be patient! Here are 3 tricks and tips that you can introduce to start feeling better TODAY: - Many folks experience the majority of discomfort after a period of sleep or rest and those first few steps can be excruciating. Keep a pair of supportive footwear right by the bed, couch or front door so you have contact with your heels and arches even for those times when nature calls in the middle of the night. - Before your feet go into those shoes, give them a short massage, do a bit of gentle stretching by flexing your toes towards your shins, and, my personal favourite recommendation, draw the alphabet using each foot. This gets the joints of the feet moving in all sorts of ways stimulating good blood flow. - Book an appointment with a foot care specialist like a Canadian Certified Pedorthist. I hear comments like this on a daily basis: "I thought it was just normal and would get better on its own.", "I wish I hadn't waited so long to see someone about my foot pain.", "I didn't know something so simple like wearing shoes in the house could make such a huge difference!" Plantar fasciitis is treatable; you do not have to suffer. To talk to a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, C.
