Peel Children's Safety Village 08.11.2020

On our Twitter we asked what your kids were doing online and got some great feedback with Roblox seemingly holding it's top position. Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing some tips and nice to knows about different platforms and today we start with Roblox. Below is a guide from https://nationalonlinesafety.com/guid/roblox-parent-s-guide which outlines some great info for parents. This is the game that when we talk about, my students always struggle with how it could be ...bad because it's cute cartoon characters. Here are some causes for concern that we focus on in our classes: -ANYONE can create a game or world that other players can join. This could include online predators who may try to lure children and means there could be inappropriate content that you don't want your child exposed to in it. Roblox relies on people reporting inappropriate content for it be removed. -Please check all the privacy & security settings within the game. Help your child create an account to make sure things are as safe as possible from the start. -Protecting personal information starts when they create their usernames. Even if a username doesn't have their name, it could give away a lot about them and could catch the attention of bad people. Ex. hockeyislife2009, puppylover12.... - -Like with any app or game, children should only accept friend requests from people they actually KNOW in the real world. Once a friend request is accepted, the "friends" can message each other outside of games. Just because someone seems like a kid, acts like a kid and talks like a kid - doesn't mean they're a kid. -Players in different games/worlds can chat with other players in the world even if they aren't "friends". Best thing to do is to have your child minimize the chat window. Chatting with people they don't know could lead to cyber bullying or to them chatting with adults posing as children. Make sure to read the whole guide below that covers a lot about this favourite game! Thanks and Stay Safe! :) Officer Alisa
