Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. We want to create a community of acceptance, but unfortunately we aren’t there yet. Th...ere are still people who are treated differently and looked down upon simply for being who they are. Earlier this year, Saskatoon City Council voted to ban the dangerous and harmful practice of Conversion Therapy. There is more to be done to ensure that everyone in our community is equal to one another, free to be who they are without fear of persecution or discrimination. We are committed to making progress on that path. To those who are intolerant towards other individuals, know that the world around you is changing. Be more kind to one another and remember what you’ve been taught since you were young, to treat others the way you’d want to be treated.

When I was first asked to write this article, I was uncomfortable and hesitant to start. Being a woman, I was worried about getting it wrong or that my voice was invalid. If I were to not write anything, I feel like that would be contributing to the problem of men’s mental health: the lack of conversation. Men and women experience many of the same mental health challenges but their willingness to talk about it is where we see the difference in outcomes. According to the Can...adian Health Agency, men have a suicide rate that is three times higher than women. The perceived standards of masculinity and stigmas surrounding men seeking support for mental health present challenges in communication which will almost certainly lead to a worsening of the underlying issue. To gather more input, I reached out to a few of my male friends on their thoughts of the topic of men’s mental health. I received answers along the lines of man up and drink more whiskey and just deal with it. Obviously, those are some pretty maladaptive coping mechanisms and definitely won’t help solve any problems. However, one of my friend’s responses really stood out to me: I think that mental health for men is really overlooked. There is a lot of stuff we worry about that we are just expected to deal with. For example, men are expected to be the providers for their future family, and I think that is what pushed me to make the decision to go to university. I felt that I needed to have an education to obtain a stable career to avoid living paycheque to paycheque. It is just something that I had to do since it is what I expect of myself and what society expects of me. My friend is definitely right, men’s mental health is overlooked. He mentioned that guys are expected to just deal with things without raising any concern. But how are men different than women? How are men supposed to handle the stressors of life on their own? The truth is that no single person is immune to stress. Humans are social beings, we are meant to work together, share our feelings, and lean on each other for support. So now what, how do we get men to reach out? Ask what you can do to help Be there to listen See more
