"Mentorship must be reciprocal and authentic, must involve listening, and should include meeting people where they are at the moment they are having the conversation.

My fascination with, commitment to, and 60+ year involvement in mentoring started when I entered high school and became connected to an older student who was assigned to help me make a successful transition to the academic demands of a large urban high school. I didn’t realize how influential that relationship would eventually become in my professional life as a developmental psychologist, child and adolescent therapist, university professor, business executive, life coach an...d metaphysical advisor. In the 1970’s the peer-to-peer relationship that had such a powerful impact on me was typically called peer counselling. And at that time, peer counselling was practiced almost exclusively in high schools. Since that time, and partly because of the research and practice that I and others actively pursued and implemented, the field grew to have many other names such as peer tutoring, peer helping, peer support, peer assistance. In addition, the use of peers to help peers expanded to all levels of the education system, including universities and colleges, and became a popular intervention for community agencies, businesses, professional associations and the mental health field. Phrases such as Kids Helping Kids, Seniors Helping Seniors, Students Helping Students, and People Helping People have become more commonplace in our society. Most of this expansion was because of the success of various peer programs, the personal experiences of the teachers, school administrators, parents and students involved, the low cost associated creating and maintaining peer programs with the high outcomes, the simplicity of the ideas involved in successful peer programs, and the quality of resources, training, and support available. Most of all, the key factor in the success and effectiveness of any peer program was the high degree of motivation that people have to help each other. I’m delighted to continue to be part of this essential way that people help each other. I'm grateful that the things I've written and co-written continue as top resources in the field and have been and continue to be major sources for understanding and practicing peers helping peers.

Since I've become an active consumer of online learning and many peer support, coaching and mentoring services have migrated to an online approach, I'm going to start compiling a series of credible article about the pros and cons of online-learning. Each of these articles have been vetted by my team. We don't always agree with their conclusions, but as long as they make a credible case, we'll include them in this set of curated articles.

Student mental health issues have increased as a result of needed social isolation during the pandemic. Normal avenues for peer interaction have been limited. For adolescents this is a major barrier to their healthy development since peer connections are a vital part of their development. Early reports of peer-based online interventions (in Iran, for example) have shown promise for dealing with generalized anxiety disorder and depression. A peer-based online intervention esta...blished at a university in Brazil ("Pega Leve")and delivered to a group of 48 students ("gatekeepers{) includes eight hours of theoretical and practical activities divided into four modules: understanding the university environment; identifying signs of emotional distress in peers; communicating empathically with someone in distress; and emotional self-regulation and proper referrals to mental health services. Impact was most successful when gatekeeper peers initiated contact. Social media also acted as a strong alternative to address the problem of reduced contact with support networks and decreased help-seeking behaviour. The authors believe the program also reduced emergency mental health care when unnecessary. Encouraging students to take part in peer support initiatives builds on the most powerful tools we have as humans: the ability to connect and support each other.(Available at no cost to subscribers to The Peer Bulletin Magazine.) Tonight the California Senate voted to pass SB 803 (Beall, D- San Jose), which establishes statewide peer support training and certification standards to bill for peer support services allowing counties to draw down millions in federal funding. Right now, there are thirty-four counties currently operating peer programs outside of their Medi-Cal program that would be able to take advantage of reimbursements from federal funds. Peer support specialists are people with lived exp...erience with mental illness and substance use disorders who help people currently experiencing those hardships. Governor Newsom outlined a comprehensive strategy to tackle our mental health crisis. Newsom stated the need for a coordinated statewide response to address the disparities in our mental health system, including recognizing peer support specialists as a key step to diversify and grow our mental health workforce.
