#ArchiveDeepDive The Volpe Sisters (1989) The first of 5 works by celebrated NYC choreographer Doug Varone, The Volpe Sisters is described as a dance play: "It would have been easy to craft something physically sublime for Peggy's dancing body but I was interested in challenging both of us to dig deep into a non-dance narrative work that embraced the emotional center of Peggy’s talents." Tickets are now on sale for Reeti, a new dance creation being presented by Theatre Oculus! Conceptualized and created by Neetika Sharma, "Reeti" is a dance film that explores the congruence of Kathak & Aztec dance cultures of India and Mexico, respectively. The film was created as part of a choreography facilitation project led by Neetika - Katha Ras Dance Lab in 2020 and was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Embedded in deep research and artists' lived experi...ences, the film follows a ritualistic approach to the choreography design, adding to its unique flavour that stands true to both cultures. A cross-disciplinary dance project, the film has original and traditional Indian and Mexican music, dynamic lighting design, and authentic traditional costumes. Reeti will be presented on Vimeo with on-demand access from Friday, June 18th at 7:00pm EST - Sunday, June 20th at 11:59pm EST. #ArchiveDeepDive - The Windows (1988), choreographed by the prolific Christopher House. "Making a solo for another dancer is an intimate act. In sharing your kinetic impulses with just one other artist, you often make them a surrogate for the dancer you imagine in your dreams. You always learn from this experience and when you work with a singular artist like Peggy, your habits and assumptions can be transformed." A message from Peggy Baker as she reflects on 2020 and looks forward to 2021! Wishing you all a safe and healthy holiday season!
This magnificent, passionate, eloquent artist was a deeply thoughtful, creative and eccentric person. I am among the countless dancers whose lives she touched deeply. I met Trish at a summer theatre program when I was 16 and she was a radiant 32 year teacher. That encounter with Trish changed the course of my life and I have always looked to her as a guide. Like so many, I treasure indelible images of Trish dancing and teaching. I share the sorrow of her loss with our entire community.
