November 11th is a significant day in the history of our country. In years past, many people gathered at local Legions, other clubs and banquet halls - busy pre...paring events to commemorate Remembrance Day. The thousands of volunteers who had generally handed out poppies to support veterans and their families are much fewer this year. COVID-19 has forced many organizers to reimagine how we can safely commemorate this important day. This year, we must pay our respects in other ways, such as virtual ceremonies. Whatever hurdles we may face currently in our world, it remains our collective responsibility to join others and pay tribute to the fallen on this day, and to make sure we never forget the sacrifice veterans made for our freedoms. To make sure our children and grandchildren understand the price of war and the freedom it brought us as a nation. When I was a young boy, my family would participate and watch my dad march in the veterans parade, and we would attend the service at the cenotaph. Each year, I with my grandchildren, have attended the local service to remember my father and all the others who served in the First and Second World Wars. My Dad was a veteran of the World War II - he passed away on November 11, 2009. As we observe November 11th, 2020, let’s also take a moment to honour our veterans who still march with us, and the men and women who are currently serving our country. Additionally, the many young cadets and other volunteers who support and help out at ceremonies across Canada. Though, like so many things this year, our ceremonies may look different, our purpose and sentiment remain the same. Please take a few minutes to reflect and acknowledge how fortunate we all are to live in a country like ours. Many people died to ensure our freedom; let's remember them.

The Prince Edward Island Federation of Labour supports the Mi’kmaq treaty right to fish for a moderate livelihood, protected by the Peace and Friendship Treaties of 1760/61, reaffirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada through the Marshall decisions of 1999. We condemn violence, damage to property, hatred, racist violence, intimidation, and vigilantism. The violence and damage to property must stop. The federal government has had 21 years to work with Mi’kmaq Nation to address t...he Mi’kmaq fishery treaty right to fish for a moderate livelihood. We call on the federal government, Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan and the Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett, to protect Mi’kmaq fishers exercising their treaty rights. The federal and provincial governments are responsible for preventing further violence and restoring peace and safety for Indigenous fishers. We ask our members and supporters to act in solidarity with treaty rights holders and to call for a swift and peaceful resolution to this conflict. See more
