The province does not regularly band bald eagles as it once did because the huge raptor is no longer considered endangered. But long time ‘eagle whisperer’ Gera...ld MacDougall, former PEI chief conservation officer and then manager of fish and wildlife, still takes interested groups into the PEI forests to band a few eagle chicks in the late spring. This gives people a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with a bald eagle. I have been on a few of these outings and I never tire of the thrill of being mere inches away from this magnificent bird. The majority of my eagle encounters are at the end of a long lens. On this outing, members of the Abegweit First Nation, of which the bald eagle plays a very important part in their culture, joined MacDougall. They were Chief Junior Gould and his family along with Jason Knockwood. Matt McIver was tasked with climbing to the nest to lower the chick down to be banded. Unfortunately, a branch near the nest broke off spooking the chick, which then jumped out of the nest and fell to the ground. The bird was unharmed and was picked up my MacDougall and placed it on its back. He said eagles calm down in this position. The chick was quickly banded and returned to the nest after being placed in a special bag. MacDougall said chicks are usually banded between 6-8 weeks of age, but this one was eight weeks old and larger then he anticipated, plus it was a small nest so all this combined caused some problems. In about 14 days it will begin hopping around the branches of the nesting tree while flapping its wings and about 14 days after that it will take to the skies. The bird will stay in the area with its parents that will teach it the ways of the eagles’ world. The bald eagle holds very high spiritual significance, (in the Mi’kamq culture), said Jason Knockwood. In our teachings they are the closet to the creator that carries our prayers to the creator. We often look at the bald eagle, or Kitpu, and the significant amount of knowledge that they hold so we would call them the grandfather eagle or grandmother eagle because of their significance to our culture. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that OHW will not be happening in 2020. The health and safety of our visitors, exhibitors, vendors, staff and the... general public is our top priority. To all the essential workers out there working every day in our province we send a huge amount of gratitude. Stay safe and stay strong!

Milk is one of the safest foods you consume // the product you purchase is never touched by human hands. True story. Raw milk travels from the cow through a mi...lking unit and into pipeline where it is contained in a bulk tank and held below 40F. Our milk hauler transfers the milk from the bulk tank onto his truck with the milk hose, then it heads to the processing facility. Milk is removed from the truck by pipeline into processing. The raw product moves through pasteurization and homogenization then into bottling in a continuous flow without being exposed to air or human touch. It's pretty darn cool! Thank you to our milk haulers who are transporting raw product as quickly as possible. Rumor has it, the current demand has Michigan milk staying IN Michigan for local consumers. We are all working continuously to provide you a safe, healthy, and nutritious product for your family

Dr. Heather Morrison confirms a SECOND case of COVID-19 in PEI. A Man in Queens County came home from travel, self-isolated, called 811 and got tested. He is recovering well at home. He did everything right, and that protected us all. Self-assessment tool will be available soon. I'll post the link when it's ready later today.
