We had an unusually warm week up in our region so I took advantage of it. Garage door open, a mild +18 and leg day at the bicep rack. Programming doesn't have to be overly complicated. It also doesn't have to be 2 hours long. All I did in this workout was multiple sets of triples, doubles and finished off with 4 singles.... During heavy lifts, I typically rest between 2-3 minutes between each set. During rest, I focus on recovery breathing, where were the weak points in technique and fixing those areas in the next lift. I don't hop on social media during training. Burnout was 3 sets of 20 reps stepping up onto a box. DOMS is real. #fitforduty #liftheavy #copswhotrain #streetparkingmembers

A throwback to about 10 years ago. If my memory serves me correct, about 80% of the class (others not pictured) I was training that weekend eventually made it into law enforcement. There were some good guys I worked with back then who weren't afraid of getting their hands into the dirt. Less than 20% also did any extra training outside of the annual recertification. This photo alone, one trained in BJJ, the other was one of my jujutsu students. This video depicts one main thing: 1. That a concept-based system with appropriate key teaching points can be taught to new learners in a short amount of time. The TRICOM system developed by Tuhon Jared Wihongi was meant originally for law enforcement and military close-quarter tactics but there is a significant amount of applications that also cross over into the civilian self-defense world.... This was an impromptu moment of experimentation to see if Mark Medeiros and Joe Apostol could adapt the concepts and application in an undetermined yet short amount of time. Even though both, have martial arts backgrounds sometimes that comes as a detriment as some practitioners have a hard time adjusting to specific movement and footwork. Vary your training. My varied training is a combination of strength, conditioning and combatives/martial arts. Lift heavy, lift often. Varied reps and sets on compound lifts. With proper technique. I emphasize this not just because of safety but to develop the full range of motion.... My cardio is jiu-jitsu, Tri-V footwork and interval training with moderate weights or body weight. Finished up a 4-day certification course for security instructors in use of force and defensive tactics. The course is challenging yet reasonable - integrating theory and practical with constant review of the previous lessons. Proper context is given and compartmentalized so the applications and concepts are easily understood. It was an energetic group that showed the drive to learn. Seven of the ten guards came from outside the Ottawa area. In fact, one is a Federal correcti...ons officer who flew in from a different province for personal development.
