While talking about bowel movements can be funny, constipation really is no laughing matter! . Chronic constipation can contribute to pelvic f...loor muscle dysfunction due to repetitive and prolonged straining. It can also create more pressure on the bladder and urethra which may contribute to prolapse, urinary incontinence, frequency, or retention. . Here are some general tips for a happy bowel: - Avoid alcohol, sweetened beverages, and refined sugars. - Try to consume the recommended 2540 grams of fiber per day with a 3:1 ratio of insoluble to soluble fiber. - When having a bowel movement, use a step stool so your feet are supported and your knees are above your hips. - Keep your mouth and pelvic floor relaxed, and NEVER strain during a bowel movement. - Head to our site to learn about the ILU (I Love You) Massage, which is a self-massage used for constipation and general abdominal pain. . If your constipation persists, reach out to a pelvic floor physiotherapist to learn what other steps you can take. . #bowelhealth #bowelmovement #bowel #letstalkaboutpoop #constipation #pooping #healthygut #healthybowel #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysiotherapy #phs #phs2019 #phsinthe6 #pelvichealthsolutions #lifelonglearners See more

While most women have never even heard of it, 33-50% of them suffer from some form of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP). . POP is the descent of the... pelvic organs (the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, rectum, or small intestine) toward or through the vaginal or anal opening. . There are different types of prolapse including: - Cystocele (prolapse of the bladder). - Rectocele (prolapse of the rectum). - Hysterocele (prolapse of the uterus). - Urethrocele (prolapse of the urethra). - Vaginal vault prolapse. - Enterocele (prolapse of the small intestine). . Symptoms of POP include: - A bulge at the vaginal or rectal opening that can be seen or felt and that may change depending on position or activity. - Heaviness or pressure felt in the perineal region (between the vagina and anus). - Incomplete emptying of or difficulty evacuating the bladder or bowels. - Difficulty initiating urination. - Discomfort during intercourse. - Pain is not typically a defining characteristic of prolapse, though some women may experience some. . Pelvic health physiotherapy can help to eradicate, minimize, or manage symptoms of POP. Strategies include: - Inner core training and pelvic floor strengthening. - Postural correction. - Constipation/toileting education. - Symptom management education. - Exercise prescription. - Pessary education and fitting. . #pelvicorganprolapse #pop #pelvicprolapse #organprolapse #didyouknow #pelvichealth #pelvichealthsolutions #pelvicphysiotherapy #pelvichealthphysiotherapy #phs #phs2019 #lfielonglearners See more

What on earth is "The Knack" and how can it improve your pelvic health? . Coined by Ashton-Miller, "The Knack" is essentially timing a pelvic ...floor contraction before the moment of expected leakage or pelvic bulge/pressure (like coughing, sneezing, laughing, etc.) . Not only do we need strong pelvic floor muscles, but they need to contract at the right time. If you experience stress incontinence or have prolapse symptoms associated with certain activities, you may lose this reflexive reaction. . Luckily, a pelvic health physiotherapist can help re-instate this reflex with practice. . You can also attempt to do "The Knack" on your own by: - Practicing your quick flicks" which are strong contractions that you release quickly. Do them just before the activity that causes your symptoms. - You need to consciously and repetitively practice The Knack until it becomes a reflexive contraction again. - If the reflex is not retrained, meaning you still experience symptoms or there is an observable descent during an increase in abdominal pressure, you should seek out help from a pelvic health physiotherapist. . #theknack #gettingtheknack #fridayfacts #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysiotherapy #pelvicphysiotherapy #pelvicfloormuscles #stressincontinence #incontinence #prolapse #phs #pelvichealthsolutions #phs2019 #phsinthe6 #lifelonglearners See more

A common misconception is that Kegels (pelvic floor strengthening exercises) are the answer to the majority of pelvic health issues. . Pro tip...: Kegels are not for everyone, and even when indicated, are often not done properly because people lack the awareness of where these muscles are. . Pro tip: Kegels are not always indicated and can sometimes aggravate your symptoms if you have excessive muscle tension in your pelvic floor muscles. . Pro tip: A pelvic health physiotherapist can help you safely determine if Kegels are indicated, and teach you how to do them properly! . #didyouknow #fridayfacts #kegels #kegel #tokegelornottokegel #pelvichealth #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorstrengthening #pelvicfloormuscles #pelvicfloortension #pelvichealthphysiotherapy #pelvichealthsolutions #phs2019 #phs #phsinthe6 #lifelonglearners See more

Let's start with the basics. . Pelvic health physiotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for common pelvic floor conditions that focuses on ...the joints, muscles, connective tissues, and nerves of the low back, hips and pelvis. . Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that attach to the front, back and sides of the pelvic bone and sacrum, which act like a hammock or sling. They also wrap around your urethra, rectum, and vagina. The pelvic floor muscles must be able to contract to maintain continence and relax to allow for urination, bowel movements, and sexual penetration. . Pelvic health physiotherapy can help treat a variety of pelvic floor conditions such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain (just to name a few). .
