Pain is prevalent and costly but poorly understood. So what is pain? Pain is an alarm system designed to protect us! ... Our brains SUBCONSCIOUSLY and INSTANTANEOUSLY compile A TON of information... what's going on in our various body systems...mechanically, chemically/hormonally, etc. what's going on in our environment our past experiences our expectations our mood what is going on in our lives/relationships...CONTEXT our beliefs and rules about health, ourselves, others, and the world Our brains evaluate based on ALL of this...are we under threat? What is the most immediate threat? Do we have the resources to cope with these threats? If the messages within and around us indicate that the level of risk overwhelms our capacity to cope. When pain persists, our alarm system becomes extra sensitive. We are on high alert and our nervous system undergoes changes that cause the alarm to sound more readily. A really powerful approach to addressing persistent pain involves caring for the nervous system at multiple levels... CONTEXT - what else is going on in your life that may be contributing to stress and an overwhelmed nervous system? In which environments do you experience pain? How can we creatively change the context or practice new ways of responding to it? What are your values and how can we help you to find ways to continue to live them in the face of pain? BOTTOM UP Approaches - Looking at the tissues and the senses to understand the signals that create a sense of danger and safety for you. AND TOP DOWN APPROCHES - The hub of these evaluations! Getting curious about our thoughts, beliefs, moods, sensations, and reactions that show up in response to or in anticipation of a flare up. The research shows that beliefs and fears associated with the pain experience, movement and activity, as well as SELF-EFFICACY are highly predictive of ongoing disability with persistent pain... THIS WORK IS NOT EASY AND ITS IMPORTANT! If this approach feels like your next logical step... #OccupationalTherapy is a good fit for you. #WHOT #pelvicpain #persistentpain #pelvichealth See more

I this sentiment heard from Kelly Wilson on NICABM's Advanced Master Program on the Treatment of Trauma. We are complex beings.... Unfortunately we often strive to reduce our complex experiences including physical and emotional pain to simplistic explanations that just don't cut the mustard. This rarely (read never) leads to resolution or control of the experience. It can exacerbate frustration and a sense of brokenness or helplessness. Leaning into complexity with curiosity and compassion is such a powerful paradigm shift. It is a stronger foundation on which to observe the experience, build insight and identify opportunities to RELATE or DO differently. #beautyincomplexity #opportunityincomplexity #selfcompassion

"Mom look I found a rock that represents you. You are at the bottom and all the stuff that you have to do is on the top...the load you carry." Wowza...that hit me in the gut. They are observant these kids of ours. ... A year of trying to shield them from the anxiety and stress that is parenting/working/teaching/household managing amidst what feels like unending demands and uncertainty. Wake up call...they see it. They feel it too. Maybe it's time to drop the shield, talk about it and work together. I am a lucky mama. Sundays are for putting down the load and going on adventures together. I have no doubt that you are feeling the load with me mamas/parents. My good friend @embracepsychotherapy sent me this article that describes beautifully the struggles and impact of navigating all the things as a parent in Ontario. It raises some powerful questions and helped me to feel less alone. Have a read! https://bronwenjones1.medium.com/indefinitely-2d82914485fe #thementalload #selfcompassion #communication #wisekiddos

Meet Gillian! Pelvic Resilience is thrilled to have our very first Occupational Therapy student. Ontario OTs are not taught about pelvic health in school and yet our role in this field is so fitting! I am thrilled to have had more and more students and faculty reach out and express interest in learning about this practice area. Many thanks to our wonderful community partners @allthingspelvic for supporting Gillian's deep dive into the world of pelvic health as well! Collabora...tion is KEY! Here is a little insight into the beautiful soul that we get to spend the next 10 weeks with! "Hi, My name’s Gillian! I am a second-year occupational therapy student at Western University. I am passionate about empowering others to do things that are important to them and am excited to dive into the world of pelvic health. I am eager to learn more about the unique experiences of those struggling with pelvic health and persistent pain and how best to support them. I have seen first-hand how challenging it is to live with chronic pain as my father has lived with it for most of my life. I have seen how pain impacts every facet of one’s life and how rewarding it is when you get the right help and can learn to manage the pain. I am honored to learn alongside Lara for my final placement and will be mainly focused on helping her create group programming. When I am not soaking in all things OT you can find me hiking, teaching my dog new tricks, or making candles."
