People Against Littering 22.06.2021

ME AND ED Today is Tue 6th, April, 2021. Got up at 6:45 am and headed out to the trail. As I crossed Dixie, a red-wing blackbird, whistling with an urgency, se...ems to call out to me. He wanted his gourmet bird seeds I presume. I whistled back acknowledging him crossed the road and dropped his snack at his feeding spot. He landed and blew me a few smooches! Of course I smiled. Today me and Ed were scheduled to complete an important project. Sometime in 2019, I had gone down to the shoreline of Bloore pond, at the corner of Dixie and Bovaird, just out of curiosity and what I saw along the banks and shoreline was appalling. Hundreds empty plastic water bottles, plastics, balls, styrofoam and all sorts of other garbage. This needed cleaning and it is definitely not a one man job. I resolved on doing something about it. The city was not cleaning it. That much garbage must have accumulated over 20 years or more. I had never seen anyone cleaning it. For a few years beginning probably around 2017, when I go walking, I often see a mature gentleman with a garbage picker and a garbage bag walking and cleaning garbage off the trail. For a long time, I just said ‘hi or good morning’ and went along my business. Picking up other people’s garbage, that’s definitely not for me. Good luck buddy! He was cleaning a part of the trail where I walked! I am terrible at making friends, I like to mind my own business. Anyways last year, I surrendered my usually ‘Good Morning’ and stopped to chat with him. He introduced himself as ‘Ed’ and I complemented him on the great job he was doing. I humbly asked him if he was willing to help in the cleaning of Bloore pond. He was happy and revealed that he had gone down to the shoreline and had seen all the garbage there too. He further told me that he, single handedly had already hauled out 21 bags of trash from one area. I was overjoyed, he was going to help. So we planned, as soon as the snow melts in March 2021 we were going to cleanup the pond. I had made a new friend! So for the past three weeks we had been going to the ‘worksite’ daily and bagging garbage. So far, more than 100 bags of stuff. We leave it by the garbage bins for the city to pick it up. Sometimes we work together and crack jokes and talk about things, religious, politics. We are just trying to get acquainted with each other. A mutual friend ‘Nadeem’ drops by off and on to help us out. Some people seeing us along the trail would give us a compliment. And we get beautiful smiles from the ladies! Can you imagine what that does to an old man heart? Today is Tuesday, and the hill of garbage you see in the photo, hopefully will be picked up. We ‘almost completed’ the cleanup. We planned to do this project each year, after the snow melts and before the greenery covers the banks. If you live in Brampton and want to help, please let us know. Any help is welcome. This is the same pond where I play with the goslings in spring and both of us with the mallards in winter. Soon there will be many babies running around. We have seen some mallards already scouting out areas on the bank of the lake to lay their eggs. The pond is their hang out and I feel happy to have assisted in the cleanup. We love our birds and do not mind cleaning up their play place. Perhaps me and Ed will have some playtime with the goslings this spring. He has taught me something important and I have to teach him how to get hugs from the goslings!

Please join me and do this for Savannah and children everywhere. I picked up 7.93 lbs., Savannah's birth weight, and added 30 lbs. more. I abided by the new Co...vid restrictions and went out alone. I liked being in the outdoors, enjoyed some healthy exercise and did something positive for our environment. A win-win situation for both my physical and mental well-being! I did miss the fun and the camaraderie of being out with my wonderful friends from P.A.L. though!

Another reason why it's important to clean up litter and fishing line is one of the worst litter for wildlife.
