. If you've ever found yourself thinking, "he'll only do it if he sees the food," then you've likely experienced overshadowing. When 2 th...ings (say, a visible piece of food and a verbal cue) are presented at the same time, the dog will attend to the thing that is more noticeable (in this case, the food). The food overshadows the verbal cue and therefore, "wins" the compound stimulus battle. This is commonly confused with blocking, where the thing that "wins" does so on the basis of it having been pre-conditioned (think reaching in your bait bag). Both overshadowing and blocking can easily be mitigated with the correct order of events (the thing you want the dog to attend to comes first) and/or extinction trials (weakening the predictive power of competing stimuli).
Playing ball with our dogs is an extremely popular activity. Here are things to take into consideration.
So important for dogs to use their noses. I prefer renaming the walk to a Sniffathon! Does your dog enjoy sniffing on walks?
One of the best canine body language vidoes I've seen! What do you see?
If you approached another person and touched them without consent you could essentially be seen to assault that person. Yet time & time again people just walk u...p to a dog and touch them, mostly on the top of their head too, which is not advisable unless that dog is really familiar with you. I watch adults telling children to ask before they touch, yet it’s mostly adults that just take for granted they can touch a dog. I hear things like dogs like me , I’ve had dogs for years or I’m good with dogs. None of these excuses are of any use to that individual dog. I also see people reaching out and a dog moving away, that’s a no thanks love yet the majority of the time people insist. Please, I know you probably love dogs, but ask before you put a hand anywhere near them. Ask their guardian then ask them. If either say no, don’t take it personally, just listen! We listen to humans with our ears. We listen to dogs with our eyes.
"I have been biting my tongue after seeing this everywhere, for fear of getting blasted by those who have a hard time reading canine body language. I see a dog who isn't comfortable with this interaction at all. He is very stiff. Dilated pupils along with little blinking. His face is very tense. Further on in the vid I see the dog giving the man what appears to be a near hard stare. My hairs stood on the back of my neck.... So much discomfort here." - Meira Frankl
Do you think you need to be the alpha to your dog? Find out why this myth was based on faulty research.
"A wolf would flip another wolf against his will ONLY if he were planning to kill it. Can you imagine what a forced alpha roll does to the psyche of our dogs?" - Dr Ian Dunbar
With so many people getting puppies during the pandemic, this is very helpful.
Very helpful chart to help owners with young puppies and are dealing with those razor sharp teeth.
Bone plates don't develop in puppies until the end of adolescence. Keep this in mind regarding activity levels with young dogs.
