Q: Why has my arch pain returned this summer? A: Here are some reasons why your arch may be in pain this summer. ACTIVITY LEVEL: As the warm weather hits, we te...nd to be on our feet more doing the things that we love like walking, running, and biking. With increased activity the connective tissue called the plantar fascia is working harder to keep the foot in place and support the arch of our foot. In working harder, often without the right support, this tissue can get inflamed and create arch pain. FOOTWEAR TYPE CHANGE: Summer brings warmth, and warm weather shoes. These types of shoes, like flip flops or strappy sandals, tend to lack arch support. They are often very flat, and lack cushioning. With a decrease in support and cushion, there is more strain on the plantar fascia and this can increase the level of arch pain. LACK OF FOOTWEAR: In summer, being barefoot tends to happen more often. While sleeping at night, the plantar fascia tissue tends to tighten. When stepping down bare foot, there is an increase in strain on the connective tissue, which can cause micro tears and be quite painful on those first steps out of bed. To help decrease arch pain, try a supportive sandal around the house as well as when you are outside. Proper support from your footwear will make a big difference in the level of arch pain you experience. If you would like specific information about your feet, contact your local Pedorthist! Foot FAQ/Fact Friday Q: How do I find a comfortable sandal that fits my foot properly? A: Here is a quick reference list to outline sandal features that will ...improve your sandal fit. Adjustable Straps: Adjustability in a sandal allows for tightening and releasing pressure on the foot. The ability to move a strap for swelling changes, wider feet, and high arches encourages the foot to sit comfortably in the sandal. Another way adjustable straps prove valuable is how they help to maintain alignment of the arch of the foot with the arch (shank) of the shoe. Multiple Widths: Wider widths in a sandal could pose to be challenge, but they are quite common within most Pedorthic clinics. Wider widths help to accommodate unique foot shapes such as Charcot foot, club foot, dropped arches and swelling. If the sandal is too narrow, it may cause you to turn/sprain an ankle. The Posterior Strap: The unpopular back strap is a great feature. Having a back strap aids the achilles tendon to lift the heel and propel the foot forward so that your steps are completed naturally and effortlessly. The back strap also holds the heel in position for proper heel stability and shock absorption. It is best to avoid flip flop/thong version and slide-on styles, as the absence of a back strap may lead to toe gripping and other changes to prevent the sandal from sliding off. Removable Insole: A sandal that has a removable insole allows you to replace the generic foot bed with a customized orthotic for additional support. Some sandals have an arch built directly within the sandal. It is important to keep in mind that we all have different arch heights and foot types and what feels good on one individual does not necessarily work well with another. Visiting your local Pedorthic clinic will provide you with sandals that work best with your foot type and current activity level. We hope these features help your find the sandal that becomes your next seasons favourite! Happy summer! To find a pedorthist near you visit www.pedorthic.ca/

The College of Pedorthics of Canada has advised Pedorthists to suspend all non-essential Pedorthic services until further notice. That being said, I will continue to answer phone calls, emails and return messages. At my discretion, I may book in assessments for custom made orthotics, compression stocking measurements, orthotic adjustment appointments etc. on a case by case basis. #workingfromhome #pedorthics #covid_19 #stayhomeifyouaresick #personalbestorthotics
Foot Fact/FAQ Friday Q: Are orthotics and Pedorthic services covered by insurance benefits? A: Yes, many health insurance plans include coverage for custom ma...de foot orthotics. Coverage may also include orthopaedic footwear, modified footwear and custom footwear. All plans are different depending on the insurance provider and the specific plan within each provider. Insurance companies will ask for a list of information to include with the claim. Within this information they will require a referral from your healthcare provider. To confirm what coverage you are eligible for, check with your insurance provider to determine the amount of coverage, which providers can write your prescription, which can dispense your orthotics, and what other supporting documents are required. Foot Fact/FAQ Friday What do custom foot orthotics look like? Custom foot orthotics, or CFOs, are as variable as the feet that will be resting on them. Dependin...g on the feet, the symptoms being addressed, and the footwear they need to fit into, there is a wide range of materials and styles of orthotics that can be provided. Orthotics can be the full length of your foot, or they can be half-length. They can have plenty of thick cushioning, or they can be very thin. They may have excavations or additional components to off-load painful areas. The design and features of your CFOs will be determined through thorough evaluation of your specific needs and conversation with your C. Ped (C) or Canadian Certified Pedorthist. See more

Should I wear shoes/orthotics indoors? If you wear orthotics in your shoes all day, why stop supporting your feet at home while youre still active. People who... suffer from foot pain could experience great discomfort, or do potential damage by walking and standing while doing chores or spending time at home. Most homes are made with hardwood and ceramic tiles that are very hard on our feet. Your orthotics are a vital piece of equipment, and if worn can aid in a more functional and productive life style. Orthotics provides you with support and comfort while doing day to day activities and promotes healthier feet. You may also choose to use a supportive slipper or sandal in the house or a sandal with your orthotic, if you prefer not to wear a full shoe in the house. If you have foot anomalies that require support it is best to wear something indoors. A Canadian Certified Pedorthist can help you choose the best option. https://www.pedorthic.ca/find-a-pedorthist/ #PACSeniors #Pedorthist #PAC See more
