1. Establish trust - establishing rapport and trust before asking others to support your ideas is critical - this takes consistent action not repeated words. 2. Be in the know’ we're not talking facts and figures, we're talking about the human elements at play in every situation. Notice and address the needs of the people you are trying to influence. 3. Know your body - body language can make or break a connection. Don’t sigh loudly when someone says something you disagre...e with. Don’t look at your phone while ‘talking’ to an employee who just asked for advice. Be aware of what your body language might be conveying. 4. Create an inspirational environment where people experience meaning - engineers and scientists often get in front of teams and customers and tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Starting, unfortunately, with what they or their product can’t do. People don’t buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it. 5. Become humble don’t confuse arrogance with confidence. The easy path means being the same person you were yesterday. It’s easy and comfortable to convince yourself that the world should work differently than it does, that you have nothing to learn from the pain. The harder path is to embrace the pain and ask yourself what you could have done differently or better or what your blind spot was. It’s harder because you stop living in the bubble of your own creation and start living in reality. Our most painful moments are also our most important.
