This year the P-A Rotary Club will not be holding its annual fall Auction and Dinner fundraiser due to Covid restrictions. In an attempt to raise funds for the... Club, Rotary has decided to have a "Mystery Draw." They are attempting to sell 600 tickets, $20 each. They are raffling 10 Mystery Bundles, each containing an item/items valued at a minimum of $250 plus a $100 bill. A copy of the ticket with further information is attached. Because Rotary is in the process of collecting items, they are unable to tell you what the items will be. Items purchased by Rotarians will be donated to the fundraiser. They have been encouraged to purchase from local artisans/businesses as much as possible. See more

HAPPY WELLNESS WEEK!

RVS contributor spent the summer finding all that awaits cyclists travelling the NB Trail from Woodstock to Plaster Rock. Check out his story and photos: A summ...er of biking the trails By Paul J Graham My summer biking strategy was simple. Every weekend I'd plan an adventure along a section of the NB Trails from Woodstock heading north along the St. John River Valley. I'd complete one section at a time and see how far I could travel over the summer. It's a bit of a cliche to admit I didn't realize the beauty in my own backyard until COVID-19 wrecked my summer travel plans, but that's precisely the discovery I made this summer out on the trails from Woodstock to Plaster Rock. The first trek ran from Woodstock to Hartland and back, which is longer than what Google maps lists as the estimated travel time of an hour and 24 minutes. This path is rough at times, rarely allowing me a chance to sit on the bicycle seat. But the views are spectacular, especially when you reach Lower Becaguimec Island and have that picturesque distant view of the World's Longest Covered Bridge in Hartland. That leaves you only minutes away from the downtown and plenty of options for lunch or relaxing near the water. From Hartland to Florenceville, the trail is much smoother. You can park in the shadow of the famous bridge and enjoy immediate access to the NB Trail. It not only takes you through some incredibly lush greenery and panoramic views of the St. John River, but you may stumble into some funky decorations. On the trail, someone painted rocks, put up decorations, set up a chair with flags, and erected a sign calling it "The Wharf." On that same section of trail, I passed by a large, rusty-looking dome structure near the Lumber Road that resembles a grain silo, but I imagined a scene from the X-files being filmed there. Before reaching Florenceville, you'll catch more excellent views of the river just before heading into the community. Eventually, you end up at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre, which acts as a natural resting spot for your lunch, and an ideal place to park for the next leg of the journey. From Florenceville, I set my next destination as the Beechwood Dam, which carried me through the Bristol end of Florenceville-Bristol and Bath. Although the trails are usually level, it offers one moderate incline just before entering Bristol. Still, you have fun speeding like mad down the other side while taking in what's almost an aerial view of the river and valley. The Florenceville-to-Beechwood journey takes you past the Shogomoc train station and the Shiketehawk Trail, both of which offer fun visitor options. The Beechwood dam delivers an impressive site when approaching by the trails. You hear the fast water splashing over rocks; then, the massive structure emerges from the trees. This spot was probably one of my favourite stops of the summer. Easy to bike, great views, and discovering something I had not previously known. Beside the dam is a large expansive park with a few thick trees so impressive they seem like a scene from the Lord of the Rings heading into Isengard. The trail eventually leads to the Perth-Andover area. I divided this into two treks. The first took me to Kilburn, near an abandoned church to use as a parking spot. On another day, I completed the ride to Perth-Andover. In one particular stretch of this trail, you experience a near transcendent moment when you move quickly from the narrow tree-lined path to emerge into a sweeping panoramic vista that takes you through a farmer's field. The dramatic and impressive sight almost makes you feel like you've gone through a portal to another dimension. I immediately felt nostalgia for when the train had been running, to know more about the people who rode the rails and worked the surrounding lands. In Perth-Andover, I happily located a small cafe I didn't know existed, the Waterfront Bistro and Cafe. Another advantage of taking these treks is finding new places to eat. On a previous Florenceville run, I discovered the French Fry hut, located just off Exit 153, definitely serves, hands down, the best fries I've ever tasted. From Perth-Andover, the bike traveller has a few different routes to consider. You can select an older trail heading to the US border, as shown by Google maps, but it's challenging and not accurate. I accidentally went into a few people's backyards and had to backtrack a bit. With some persistence and a willingness to feel embarrassed, you can reach the US border on this trail. The trail carries you along the Aroostook River into some isolated and spooky areas, especially along the route's darkly wooded section. It leads to another old power station that looks like it could serve as a super-villain base. The trail ends abruptly at Tinker Road. But the biker can follow Tinker the short distance to the US border where American citizens live within chatting distance. I'm sad to say that no one ventured close enough for a transnational chin wag at the border fence, but understandable during COVID. In Perth-Andover, you can also take a route to Grand Falls and Plaster Rock. I chose the Plaster Rock route because it has a definitive ending point for the trail that would serve as a sense of accomplishment. Again, I was amazed at encountering another dam, this one along Route 105, which carries car traffic. The stretch just beyond the dam heading north to Plaster Rock is a real gem. The high water, thick trees make for a natural spot for cabins and homes, and plenty of water sports. Biking alongside rocky cliff-like hills gave me a sense of isolation and transcendence; it begs one to take deep inhalations of fresh forest air and push yourself further. In my case, I could see an approaching rainstorm engulf the valley in the distance, both striking and frightening at the same time, so I ended this leg of the journey at Arthurette. Lastly, this summer trek's final leg involved biking the remainder of the way to Plaster Rock. I parked at the Canada Post office, across Route 109 from the NB Trail. It begins as a much rougher trail but well worth completing. Along that portion, the biker finds a four-km stretch along a farmer's field. When entering Plaster Rock, you'll even bike underneath an older train bridge with the rails still intact, though I'm unsure if it is still in use. You may even find more treasures along this path, as I spotted a mushroom the size of a soccer ball. In the final stretch, I discovered the trail ended before indicated on Google maps. Still, reaching the bridge along Route 108 served as a natural ending point. Just beyond it, however, the trail seems to continue further at an immense red brick structure, like an abandoned castle tower. Upon reaching this point, I felt like Roland from Stephen King's Dark Tower series and considered it a completed summer mountain biking journey. During all of this biking, I was always amazed by the scenery and wondered at the different places' history. We need to do more in New Brunswick to highlight our history and natural beauty. An additional benefit of this quest was the drive to reach the starting locations. The stretch of highway north along Route 109 rivals any mountain vista in New Hampshire, a great way to capture some fall photos, and consider your mountain bike trek in the next summer. For me, I'm already planning to purchase a Fat bike for winter trekking along the trails. There's still much more to see and discover in our fair New Brunswick.

Are you looking for safe, supportive, and joyful after-school community for your child? Is your child interested in learning the violin or viola in a fun grou...p context? Amidst social distancing and the difficulties of the Covid-19 pandemic, our kids need community and safe spaces to develop and grow now more than ever. Grace Notes After-School program seeks to meet this need by providing children ages 5-12 with a safe space to grow as their whole health and development are nurtured through music, nutrition, movement, and community. Students will attend the program two days per week from 2:30-5pm where they will have the opportunity to learn and perform the violin or viola in a group setting. Through fun musicianship games, rhythm cup, and bucket band students will learn music theory, note-reading, rhythm, and music history. While experiencing the benefits and joys of making music, the student's physical and emotional well-being will also be supported through healthy snacks and movement activities. Grace Notes After-School Program seeks to remove any barriers and allow equal access for every child to receive the benefits and joy of a music education. Therefore, with generous community support, Grace Notes After-School Program is offered at minimal cost to the students with scholarships available. If you're interested in participating in the Grace Notes After-School program, please fill in this brief questionnaire and I will be in touch with you with more information and a formal registration form https://forms.gle/mTWBDfrXvrvrrJBQA If you are interested in supporting the Grace Notes After-School with donations of supplies, finances, or time, please feel free to email [email protected].
