Frankensynth. A few more things left to finish before the show.

In 1993, a friend of mine asked if I’d heard Nine Inch Nails. I was sixteen then, listening to a lot of Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Front 242, as well as The Cure, Morrissey, and the blooming grunge scene. Though I’d read of Nine Inch Nails, I had never in fact heard anything. Handing me a Maxell XLII-90 cassette, my friend assured me I’d like them. It was mine for the weekend. On the label above the tape reels, scrawled purple ink: Pretty Hate Machine. I was discovering NIN j...ust months before The Downward Spiral would be released. PHM, Broken, Fixed--they were all out before I got my first taste of NIN. But what a taste. PHM echoed the isolation, heartbreak, misunderstanding, and powerlessness that was my adolescence, and said it better than anything else I’d yet heard. Then came Broken. That half-hour of music taught me to stand back up and stop worrying about the wounds. Pain and regret slow us down; they shouldn’t stop us. When I come to an angry chapter in my life, those eight songs growl in me, empower me, and see me through to the other side. It continues to do that, time and again, like magic. For me, Broken changed everything. And this year, Broken turns twenty. To celebrate, my band [perversion:] is performing it as faithfully as possible. If you’re in the Toronto area, please join us.
