ATTIC CLEAN UP: SHOULD YOU HIRE A PROFESSIONAL Evicting rats, squirrels or raccoons from the attic is a big process and it comes with some side effects. The process doesn’t end after eviction: there is still a major clean up needed to decontaminate your home. If you recently had to remove any kind of animal in your attic, you need to invest in an attic clean up. Here’s why. Structure and Property Damage... Rodents gnaw, which isn’t only annoying, but quite literally leaves a dent in your home’s structure. For them, all materials like drywall, soft concrete and wooden beams is fair game. But it doesn’t end with bite marks. Acidic urine can burn through the wood. Raccoons can destroy materials such as roof vents, soffits, and loose shingles, as they tear their way inside. This type of damage ruins your home’s structural integrity and ultimately leaving you to deal with the aftermath. Rats, squirrels and raccoons use the insulation in your attic to build their nests and keep themselves warm. Removing it from your walls compromises your home’s ability to retain heat. This means you’re not only dealing with replacement, but higher than normal electric bills. Not only is replacing insulation annoying, the insulation found in your attic is now ripped, soiled and contaminated by the wildlife who used it. What’s Involved It’s an intense process that covers all the bases. All necessary measures are taken to get your home back in order. The main stages include: * Evicting the critters * Clean up and decontamination * Followed by various levels of restoration as necessary and provided by the removal company. NAKED TRUTH ABOUT BUGS Most of us want nothing to do with pests, outside of hiring someone else to get rid of them for us. We’d rather not dwell on the naked truth about bugs or rodents. For those of you who have an interest in these creatures, this post is pretty cool. For those of you who are fairly squeamish about pests around your home, this post may be the stuff of nightmares. NOT ALL INSECTS ARE BUGS, BUT ALL BUGS ARE INSECTS... It’s a bit confusing, right? So to make things simpler: within the insect world, not all of them are bugs but all of them are insects. Although it’s acceptable to interchange the two words, true bugs lack teeth and have tough fore wings. They also have a stylet, a straw-like mouth that is intended for sucking. Insects, on the other hand, have three-part bodies and usually have two pairs of wings and three pairs of legs. ANTS There are over 12,000 species of ants on earth. Check out some mildly terrifying, but mostly cool, facts about the ant. 1. The total weight of all the ants in the world is equal to that of all humans in the world. 2. Of all insects, ants have the longest lifespan. They can live up to 30 years. 3. In proportion to its size, the ant is one of the strongest creatures on earth. 4. Some ant species make slaves out of other ant species. 5. Ants and humans are the only two species that farm other creatures. Ants farm aphids in a mutualistic relationship. FAMILY BUSINESS: FAMILIES WHO PLAY TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER There are four of us in our family business. Stephen is the head of the family and the head technician. Tayler, our eldest son, is a technician and Cruz is our apprentice technician. Me? I’m the matriarch and general dogs bodyI run the office. When you use our services, you get to understand a little more about our business. Because you can have a more direct connection with us as business owners, you tend to notice ...that we also have a more personal interest in you. No matter what, we want to see our sons succeed whether it be working with us or working for someone else. As they choose us, we go over and beyond mentoring them and teaching them all that we’ve learned. The bottom line is we want to pass our knowledge down to them. FAMILY KNOW THE INDUSTRY BETTER THAN ANYONE Stephen and I have decades of business knowledge as we grown our family businesses over the years. However, we don’t want all that knowledge to go to waste. We’re eager to pass it down. It’s better than any college course you can take because you’ll learn it first hand and not from a textbook. WE CHALLENGE OUR KIDS We know our kids strengths and weaknesses. As a family, we have to cover each other and pull our own weight. If one of us is slacking, we’re going to let them know. We will give them an opportunity to not only improve, but also become better at what they do as a result. FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES There’s a certain level of trust that happens in families that doesn’t happen anywhere else. If one of us has a new, out of the box idea for something, selling it to us is much easier than selling it to someone else. Families believe in family and know family members are invested in the business. It’s a true team effort. Behind of the success of every small business, there is a family. -Unknown

Jewellery designs of insects have been in vogue for a long time. The Georgians and the Victorians definitely loved wearing bug jewellery. But I think you will agree, these creepy Christmas gifts are just too creepy! COCKROACH BROOCHES Bejeweled Madagascar Hissing Cockroach brooches were highly sought-after by celebrities and everyday fashionistas in 2005. The client list has included Kim Kardashian, Uma Thurman and one of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children. What is the m...ost surprising thing about these Swarovski crystal encrusted bugs? They were still alive when you wore them! They came with a little leash so that they would stay put. Salt Lake City fashion designer Jared Gold designed the brooches. The brooches retailed for $60 to $80 US dollars and could be shipped overnight. Gold explained that the roach brooches enjoyed the warmth of their owner’s body and looked best with light clothing. The cockroach brooches came with instructions for care and typically lived a year when taken care of properly with water, fruit, and a clean aquarium. This is like having jewellery and a pet in one! VICTORIAN CRICKET PENDANT NECKLACE This lovely Victorian cricket pendant necklace is surrounded by the life cycle of bed bugs! Who would want to wear anything to do with bed bugs??? RAT DIAMOND EARRINGS Genuine Rat’s Feet, chopped off and made into Elegant Dangle Earrings. These would be ideal for Halloween if you have the stomach to wear them! RAT SLIPPERS These are the creepiest Christmas gift I have seen in a long time. Can you imagine slipping your feet into rat slippers? They look so real I fear that they are actually hollowed out rats. Could that be? They would have to have been made by a taxidermist.

Christmas dinner is the jewel in the crown for feasts and if you let them, unwanted pests will start to appear in your home. There is always a lot of food at Christmas time and of course, there are plenty of leftovers to go around. Pest problems around the holiday season cause you stress when you should be full of good cheer. Let’s unbug Christmas for you this year! STORE FOOD IN CONTAINERS Store your prepped and unprepped food in tightly sealed containers. Fact: a family of ...rodents can live off a crumb a day while ants and cockroaches can survive for about a week. KEEP YOUR FRUIT IN THE FRIDGE Take your fruit out of the fridge when you are ready to eat it. And put the peel or core in a bag before you throw it in the garbage. The extra layer of protection will keep insects from laying eggs in rotted fruit carcasses. LEFTOVERS Seal them up tight and store them out of reach of rodents and other pests ie. store in the fridge or in plastic containers. TAKE THE GARBAGE OUT Keep your garbage sealed at all times and make sure you take it out. Fact: rodents and insects can find a way into your garbage. Household Tasks * Clean spills up, immediately. * Don’t leave stacks of dishes near the sink. Put them in soapy water. * Deep clean around and under the fridge and stove. These are notorious collection areas for rotting grime and sticky spills. * Vacuum crumbs off the rug on a regular basis. * Leave pet food out only during meal time. * If you are having difficulties with uninvited pests, give us a call on (778) 903-7378. From our family to yours, we wish you a pest-free Christmas!

Check out of the Roach Motel. There are a number of DIY solutions to cockroach control but do any of them work? The Duct Tape method seemed a good enough solution to examine. Duct tape is amazing stuff as it has so many uses. But do you know that it can also be used to catch cockroaches? Yep. It makes a really good roach motel.... DUCT TAPE METHOD First, you pull off a 5-inch piece of tape. Then, fold the end in one half inch on each side so you can pick it up without touching the sticky part. And then, put a half teaspoon smear of peanut butter directly in the center of the sticky side. Presto, you have yourself a roach trap. duct tape cockroach trap with dead cockroaches and peanut butter Place the trap where you are seeing the roaches. In Vancouver, we have German cockroaches which are small and light brown. So it is best to turn the tape over (sticky side down). The little German cockroaches try to slip under there and get at the peanut butter. When they do, their backs get stuck to the tape. Simply, pick up the tape and throw the roaches away. Clearly, this trap is very effective at capturing cockroaches. In a week, you could dispose of a hundred cockroaches! So, what’s the catch? Though this is a great way to capture roaches, it does absolutely nothing to protect your home or business from these insects. If you snag a hundred roaches on those slabs of duct tape, that means you probably have thousands still living hidden in your home. Those roaches are going to keep coming and coming. Forget putting a band aid on your cockroach infestation. The truth is you’ll never get rid of your roaches with duct tape. You won’t even make a dent in their populations. So check out of the roach motel and check into cockroach-free home. Get your home fully protected by Pestcheck with proven results and years of experience. It is the better way to go.

Don’t Be Spooked by Halloween Pests! When the chill of autumn arrives, so do some of the season’s scariest decorations. Witches, ghosts, vampires and mummies are the season’s headliners, but what about their trusty sidekicks? It’s nearly impossible to create a truly spooktacular Halloween display without creepy crawlies like spiders, insects, rats, and mice. But what happens when these frightening decorations become the real thing? It might be time to call in the Halloween ...pest control experts at Pestcheck. Haunting Insects Bed bugs do not spread disease, but they feed on humans leaving behind itchy welts on their victims. Bed bugs grow to the size of an apple seed and usually come out at night to feed. Bed bugs can live for more than a year without a feeding what a nightmare! Cockroaches creepily crawl around your home spreading bacteria wherever they go. Roaches will hide in cracks and crevices, cardboards boxes and can even cause allergies and asthma. They reproduce quickly, so when you see one, there is always more hiding. Spiders are fast and eerie, especially when you walk through their webs ick! Some spiders have painful and poisonous bites. No wonder some people have arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Their webs are designed to catch insects for food. Lucky for us, we are not their bait! Creepy Creatures Mice and rats are not cute! Many people suffer from musophobia, the fear of mice and rats. Rodents carry disease, leaving a urination and droppings trail wherever they go. They destroy property with their gnawing and can cause fires from gnawing on electrical wires. Rodent removal and rodent control should be top priority for Vancouver homeowners at this time of the year. Halloween or not, we are not afraid of your dark attic, musty basement or creepy closets. Get rid of scary Halloween pests before they get rid of you! See more
