Yesterday Judy Aldous (Alberta At Noon) aired "Our Relationship with Dandelions" 12:30 - 1:00pm. Anita Sanchez, author of "The Teeth of the Lion: The Story of the Beloved and Despised Dandelion" was interviewed. It was very clear on what side of the issue Judy Aldous was on. After a long winter and with Covid-19 keeping us at home there is a huge desire to jump into garden clean-up. But wait! Underneath all that leaf litter there are insects which are sill waking up to warmer weather. If you start raking your garden beds and under shrubs and trees you are also raking up beneficial insects. If those beneficial insects hit the recycle bin and get composted you will have lost invaluable security guards that help protect against "bad" insects and disease. So hold on! Give our beneficial insects a chance to do their job!

The pesticide season begins in Calgary - not an auspicious start to Earth Week:( Herbicide spraying is taking place in the communities of Aspen Woods, Cliff Bungalow and Upper Mount Royal this week. It's hard to suggest alternatives, as much as we would like to, as targets are not disclosed. Ward 7 has been able to stop herbicide spraying in their communities so let your councillor know if you would like to see your Ward adopt the same policy. ... https://www.calgary.ca//Pesticide-and-herbicide-spraying-i Ward 7 has been able to stop herbicide spraying in their communities so let your councillor know if you would like to see your Ward adopt the same at: https://www.calgary.ca/cityc//contact-your-councillor.aspx

Interesting - I was just reading the 2018 European Union Report on Pesticide Residues on Food, published April 2, 2020. So, I thought I would search for a similar report on pesticide residues on food in Canada. The best I found was a 2014 -2015 Annual Report that had to be requested before I could read it. WTF! https://www.inspection.gc.ca///1530632244911/1530632245212
