Friends, this has been a year. I’d like to say that I wish everything was different, and in many ways I do. But there’s been so much good. Sometimes it’s hard to see it, but it’s there. This business has seen so much growth this year-so many more flowers than last year. I’m thrilled to see what 2021 will bring. All that to say, Petal and Stem, as of today-will not be taking any more order for 2020. 2020. As I reflect on the year gone by, there are a few words that come to mind. Resilience, adaptation, and loss. We have come face to face with an unprecedented time in history. Yet, we come to the brink of a new year, some running, some crawling-but we made it. That is resilience.... There have been innumerable changes to our lives this past year, from work to school to simply going to the grocery store. We’ve learned how to be flexible, how to swing with the punches-how to lower expectations. That is adapting. But with the triumphs have come losses, too. We have forgone birthday and wedding celebrations, gathering with loved ones over the holidays, welcoming friends into our home for coffee. Many have lost loved ones, jobs, the spark for life. That is loss. Isn’t is strange how joy and sorrow can be held in the same breath? Where growth and grief have linked arms more tightly than we ever thought possible. With a risk of frost earlier in the week, I harvested as many blooms as I could. Thankfully though, the frost didnt come and our garden continues to surprise me. This has to be one of the sweetest stories. Last week I received a phone call. Her fiancé purchased one of the gift certificates from the fundraiser Petal and Stem recently donated to. Originally she was going to just use silk flowers, but her fiancé didnt want that! Hence the gift certificate! A few flowers from @flourishfreshcutflowers and a bunch from my own garden, speckled with a half dozen cultivated ivory roses and her bouquet took shape! I cant help but swoon when... local flowers are used. Their quality and uniqueness is truly remarkable! This past past weekend has been spent knee deep in discarded petals, foraging through our garden for those special touches, and setting up shop at @thenorlandhistoricestate for a gazebo installation. This wedding is my biggest to date. While I was so excited for the opportunity to design such a large wedding, Ive also been anxious. Theres a lot riding on my shoulders. But getting to spend the day, socially distanced of course, chatting with the great event planners from @cn...ceventdesign, Chloe and Cassey, extending a hand where needed, and seeing the bride and groom laugh and share a few special moments together, I couldnt be happier. Alright, I couldnt wait to share a photo of this nearly 100% Alberta sourced bouquet! Designed for @ashton_thompsons elopement at the stunning @primrose.lane.farm this past weekend, the majority of these flowers were sourced from @primrose.lane.farm, including the amaranthus, calendula, strawflower, nigella, bachelor buttons, asters, sweet peas, pink snapdragons, and eucalyptus. The yarrow, ivory snaps, peach stock, and phlox were from my garden while the Hanoi blush ranunculus and additional greenery were sourced by @flowerfiend at @floristssupply! Gold hour goodness. A few weeks back I threw out an offer to see if any local photographers were free for a little impromptu photo shoot. I had some gorgeous blooms needing to be arranged.
