Quill facts - By Dr. Sandy Jones Porcupines live in wooded areas, climb trees and can have 30,000 quills or more! Porcupines DO NOT throw their quills when atta...cked, they merely curl up and let the dog injure itself. Sadly, many dogs are repeat offenders. Embedded quills are painful, and scratching can cause quills to go deeper and break, making them harder to find. Cutting the tip doesn't deflate the quill, it just makes it harder to find. Quills can sometimes migrate and cause devastating effects on the brain, eyes and chest. Quills are removed under heavy sedation or anesthesia, and minor incisions may be needed to find quills under the skin. Sometimes not all quills can be found! If your dog gets quilled, see a vet immediately to alleviate the pain and prevent further migration. Please don't wait until the next day. See more
