To join our garden community, reach out on Facebook or at [email protected] No experience necessary, we provide your plot, soil, access to tools, one-on-one support, and seeds all for an annual fee of $20.00! For children and Youths (18 and under) we have smaller plots available for the little gardeners who want their own space to grow! Youth plots are $10 for the season and come with all of the support of the regular plots. Children must be supervised by a guardian at all times in the garden. We also have wheelchair-accessible plots, and extra-raised plots available, for those with trouble bending over. Community Centre Program Teaching Kids To Cook (Photo: Peter McKee Community Centre/Food Depot Alimentaire website) The Peter McKee Community Food Centre is helping kids to learn how to cook. Three times a month, kids can take part in a Junior Chef Academy, in the Centre’s Medavie Community Kitchen.. Coordinator Adam O’Brien says this helps the kids to feel value and a purpose, It’s something we really wanted to do to get our kids into the kitchen , getting them cooking and start them at a really young age. O’Brien says the kids are between the ages of 8 and 12 years old, and they are able to work independently, Getting the kids to prepare the meals themselves. There are instructors and volunteers helping them there, but the kids are the ones making the meal. They’re the ones using the knives, they’re the ones using the stove, they’re the ones using the equipment. We really encourage that they do it, not the Instructors. The main reason for the program is learning to cook, but O’Brien says there’s another reason the Junior Chef Academy is so important, The other purpose is if there is a kid in need, here’s another opportunity for them to get a meal. It’s another way to get another healthy meal or health snack into a kids who may not have that opportunity. It is also unlike a soup kitchen type atmosphere. Because of COVID-19, they’ve had to reduce the number of participants, so classes fill up fast.. More details on how to sign up, can be found on the Junior Chef Academy Facebook page.
