"No discussion of cannabis can be adequately situated and addressed without carefully considering the criminalization of cannabis as well as the legacy it leaves. Like most other areas of society, structural and systemic racism have both historically and presently impacted cannabis policy and use, an issue that we wish to explore more deeply. By reflecting on the historical impacts of cannabis policy, we hope to discuss a new way forward that considers the intersections of cannabis use, mental health, and anti-racism efforts in policy, programs and resources."

The partners working to bring a Consumption Treatment Service (CTS) Site to Peterborough are pleased to announce that the necessary applications have been submi...tted to the Provincial and Federal governments. The submission of these applications follows the recent conclusion of Community Consultation sessions with local businesses and residents in downtown Peterborough. In addition to conversations with local businesses and residents, consultations were also held with people who use drugs to gain their perspectives on the proposed site. The partners are committed to creating a space that meets the needs of people who use drugs without disruption for nearby neighbours. The application process for the CTS is twofold, requiring an exemption from the Federal Government to operate a site under Section 56.1 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and approval from the Provincial Government. Provincial approval will provide the site with funding under the Province of Ontario’s Consumption and Treatment Services program. Until funding is approved, the partners must carry the costs associated with this new site at 220 Simcoe Street and professional studies needed for the application. The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough recently launched a $50,000 crowdfunding campaign to support the Site. Donations to the Consumption and Treatment Services Fund can be made online: https://cfgp.ca/project/cts-fund/
Launch of Consumption and Treatment Services Fund: Preventing overdose deaths and improving health Donate to the Fund: https://cfgp.ca/project/cts-fund/ With th...e launch of an opioid response hub in the former Greyhound bus station in downtown Peterborough, organizing partners are calling on community members to invest in establishing a Consumption and Treatment Services site (CTS). A CTS welcomes people to use their drugs safely under trained supervision and be connected to other life-saving supports. Partners are seeking approval of Provincial funding for a CTS but this will take many months. Help is needed to retain this ideal property and to do professional studies needed for the application. There have been 36 suspected overdose deaths in the first nine months of 2020; there were 28 deaths in all of 2019. The Peterborough public health unit area has the third highest rate of opioid overdose deaths and emergency room visits in the province. The COVID pandemic has increased the risk of overdose as it has created more desperation, isolation, and an even more toxic drug supply. A Safe Consumption and Treatment Service (CTS) site will prevent overdose deaths and connect people who use drugs to addictions treatment, wound care, mental health services, health care, and other resources.
