Unblocked Internally, Frictionless Externally Daoists do not talk about afterlife or reincarnation as other religions do (Daoism may not be a religion at a...ll!). They see life as a natural component of a continuous cycle that loops and rotates without beginning or end just like the seasonal changes. It is indicated that all lives are connected subconsciously, and our subconsciousness contributes to the collective subconsciousness. The sense of ego or separation between self and others is a temporary illusion (see the story of empty boat in Zhuang Zi Outer Passage. From a Daoist perspective, it is important to cultivate the wisdom of water in ourselves at physical, psychological and spiritual levels, because nourishing life starts from nourishing our own existence first. We cannot give others joy and peace if we do not feel them inside. They can only be overflown from a full cup to another. An empty cup cannot pour out wine. The prerequisite of joy and peace is wisdom/consciousness I avoid using the word of love since it is such a misleading word, but I feel love and wisdom/consciousness are two manifestations of the same thing. Love cannot exist without wisdom/consciousness, and vise versa. In my opinion, Zhuang Zi is like a compassion buddha with mater story-telling skills. The entire book of Zhuang Zi articulates obstacles on our way of cultivating wisdom by using highly coded language and stories. Each chapter dives deeper into our belief systems, using logic and reasoning to dissolve the illusional walls that our brain established (The inner passages are supposed to be written by Zhuang Zi himself, and the outer passages were written by his disciples). Using metaphors and allegories is an essential manner of expression in ancient Chinese culture. It is a coded communication system designed to encourage felt sense and indirect knowing. Chinese characters are originated from images depicting energetic qualities of certain objects and/or activities. For example, Dao De Jing says: The highest form of wisdom/consciousness is like water. Since it is unrevealed what this ultimate wisdom/consciousness is, we need to observe water’s qualities: Tends to flow to the lowest position; Follows the rule of least friction; Accepts all kinds of dirt and scums; Formless, extremely flexible; Changes its form according to the environment (shapes of container, temperature); Cultivates life and is present in all life forms; Harmless when calm, extremely powerful and disastrous when disturbed; Reflective (water contained in Jiàn was used as mirror in ancient times); Conductive; Can erode rock and rust metal slowly; Fresh when flows, putrid when still; This coding system is consistent throughout Daoist culture. Chinese medicine system also employs a highly coded language. Even people who speak Chinese might not understand these codes if they are not familiar with this system. Phlegm is a poor translation of since it fails to communicate the presence of blazing fire . indicate congested water due to cold, since means a cool drink. is condensed by heat or cold so they are thick and not as conductive as regular body fluids, which can convey Qì throughout the body. These blockages cause frictions in the body and lead to chronic inflammation deep in the tissues. Since our consciousness is not present there, we may not notice them until they have transformed into much severe diseases such as tumors and cancers. Neijing points out that our channels correspond with planetary movements, bodies of water on earth, seasons, time, frequencies, directions, etc. We can know the state of our channel Qì by observing natural phenomena surrounding us. Su Wen 27: Ling Shu 11: You may have noticed that Classical Chinese medicine is all about our position in time and space. Our brain perceives time linearly, while our body and subconscious does not have the same perception of time. Part of our body can be stuck in a traumatized state even after the trauma has passed. Life force cannot flow through that area because our consciousness is not present there. Healing cannot happen without the presence of our consciousness. So the ancient people developed Qi Gong, needles, moxa, herbs, scraping board, Tui Na, etc. to guide Qì or blood to a blocked area. Regulating Qì and blood is very similar to regulating rivers. The purpose is to remind our brain to feel at ease, connect it with all areas of the body so that our Qì can flow naturally. An ideal life in a Daoist's perspective is that our consciousness is fully connected with our body so that we are able to live peacefully, free from frictions and conflicts.

the melancholy of almost autumn. the way the roots drop in the way the sap descends the way the leaves release.... the storms and the internal things they brew. the light, diminishing the mist the cooling air the wind, the crisp the apples red and ripe the last color of blood on the earth before the brown humbles us all Words: The wild Matryoshka Image: Kirsty Mitchell

I am very excited to announce that I am relocating Peterborough Acupuncture on Sept. 19th to 64 Hunter Street West. Just beside the Quaker Oats factory. The new space is a dream! A gorgeous Century building that was once home to the architect who designed Market Hall. Hardwood floors, beautiful natural light, long sweeping bannisters, and even a wonderful sunroom for small qigong and taiji classes. On top of all this, while my primary clinic space will be moving up stairs, ...there is a fully wheelchair accessible treatment room available on the ground floor as well! It has been a long held goal to be able to provide care in the most accessible way possible and I am so excited that this is now a reality. I hope you will come and experience an acupuncture treatment in this great new space. Here is to a wonderful next decade of Traditional Chinese Medicine practice in Peterborough.
