Each stone tells a story, of a journey to its creation. This stones unlikely story to formation starts about 450 million years ago in what is now the Arizona Dessert, this area was then a luscious deciduous Forrest with multiple rivers running through it. At this time there was massive flooding and tropical storms that knocked over trees and branches and they washed down the raging rivers; some as big as 9 feet in diameter and 200 feet tall! Many of these trees were buried by... the river sediment. Nearby volcanoes erupted numerous times and these eruptions blanketed the area in volcanic ash that had a high silica content. This perfect mixture of circumstances prevented oxygen from reaching the buried trees to cause decomposition of the wood. The soluble ash dissolved over time by groundwater flowing through the sediments and the silica gradually replaced the organic materials of the trees with trace amounts of Iron oxides (red/brown yellow) Mica (black), Chromium, cooper & cobalt (green/blue), Manganese (pink/orange), Manganese Oxides (blackish yellow), Silicon Dioxide (clear/white/grey)These are the different color representations you see that vary each individual petrified wood piece. These pieces of art, unknown to the world at this time and forgotten, for now. About 40-60 million years ago this Forrest started to experience massive drought- trees once luscious leaves fell to the ground in response to the drought, sunlight passed through the leafless canopy, which heated and dried the surface of the ground forcing many species new and old alike to to evolve to adapt. 23.7- 36.6 million years ago began what is the start of the modern day dessert, animals such skinks and Gila monsters roamed the now arid lands. The first recorded discovery of petrified wood followed the Great Depression in the 1930’s as people scavenged, looking for any sort of rock, stone or gem that could be turned to jewelry as a source of income. The word Petrifed- comes from the Latin word Petro which means simply wood turned to stone. You can find petrified wood all over the world; Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and each of those forests petrified wood specimens will have their own individual story of creation- this one, was just a tale of the Sonaron Dessert in Arizona and its petrified wood Forrest.
