Mia has some very exciting news to share with you. She got an early Christmas gift. For those that don't know her story here's some background. Mia is a de...af, 9 yr. old, Staffordshire mix, who was surrendered to a pound at 9 years of age. She had never been to a vet in her life. She was surrendered with a tumour on her head and a large tumour on her underbelly. We learned about her when a notice went out to rescues that her time would soon be up at the pound and she needed rescuing due to medical issues. We felt Mia deserved a second chance at life, so we asked the pound for an extension while we found a foster. We are grateful that they granted us an extension. We secured a pawsome foster and took her into our care. We had no idea what the diagnosis would be for the tumours, or if we were taking in a terminal dog, but rescue often means taking a chance, and if she was terminal, at least she wouldn't die without a family. We had her tumours removed. The lab results came back that they were both Stage 2 cancer, but thankfully the cancer hadn't spread to her internal organs, and the surgeon was able to get all the cancer during surgery. Next, we had Mia's limping diagnosed and it was discovered through x-ray that she had not one, but two legs with torn ligaments. We had a special online auction for her in August to raise funds and she had TPLO surgery. Now Mia requires post surgery physiotherapy. These treatments are valuable in overall rehabilitation and quality of life, but they are also expensive. This is where Mia's Christmas gift comes in. We were approached by Melissa Robinson, owner of Pet Valu Pembroke and Pet Valu Petawawa with an offer of financial assistance for one of our foster animals in need of medical care. That lucky animal is Mia! Wow....how exciting for Mia that she will be able to get the physio she needs! Melissa has also offered to help with the surgery for her other damaged leg. Mia will have surgery on that leg when her first one gets strong enough. We are planning on surgery sometime in the new year. THANK YOU Melissa Robinson from VAR and Mia. What a pawsome Christmas gift for Mia Please support these two businesses - Pet Valu Pembroke and Pet Valu Petawawa, owned by Melissa Robinson. She has shown much compassion for an animal in need and our other foster animals, as well. Melissa, her Manager Trish, and staff also collect donations for us at the Pembroke Pet Valu, and regularly donate to us. Melissa also donated cases of canned food for one of our senior dogs, and kitten food for our kittens. THANK YOU Here are some pictures of Mia's journey with us so far. A video will be posted separately of her on the underwater treadmill that is now part of her physio, and that Melissa is paying for. The pictures go from most recent to the earliest, when she arrived. Pictures 2 and 3 are Mia at her recent checkup with her foster-to-adopt mom, Julie Mulroney. Picture 4 is Mia relaxing at her foster mom's home. Pictures 5 & 6 are Mia post-op after her leg surgery. Picture 7 is the day of Mia's leg surgery. Picture 8 is the day we were told Mia was cancer free after the tumours were removed. Pictures 9 & 10 are of Mia shortly after she arrived to us. She was so full of life. Her foster mom at the time, Jessica Luce Kerr, put t-shirts on her before surgery to help take the weight of the tumour off of her The last picture is Mia the day she arrived and the first time we had a chance to actually see the large tumour under her belly.
