One of the most interesting parts of coaching and working with people on trauma is when people unconsciously choose to open up to me despite the fact that I may be a huge trigger for them. It could be my gender or physical appearance that is a trigger, yet still they start to share deep and intimate details. While 2020 at times has felt like it’s gone to hell in a dumpster fire there is much I am still #grateful for: 1. A great and meaningful #relationship with my partner in crime @meaghan_grant 2. #family and #friends that are back in the UK are safe and well.... 3. Great friends here in #canada 4. Having a safe and comfortable home that I have been able to afford to live in even after losing my job in March 5. Being able to make the choice about how many people I mix with to maximise my chances of staying safe and well during unpredictable times with #covid_19 6. My #coaching #business - I get to coach amazing clients and change lives as well as have my own coach to work on my own stuff 7. Getting to work in a job that honoured my values and knowing how much happier that made me feel in my life overall. While I lost that job back in March I am starting another job in November that also satisfies my values and will allow me to earn a lot more money. And it’s going to be 100% remote for good, which is a goal I have had for almost a decade. I will now have the freedom to work anywhere in the world with a reliable Internet connection, which makes the possibility of traveling home more often much more viable #career #love #life #purpose #meaning #gratitude #canadianthanksgiving #canadianthanksgiving2020 #happiness #lovemylife

Anxiety check-in Happy Sunday everyone! Just checking in to see how your anxiety levels are doing? Feels a bit like the world has been like a cluster of weird madness and doesn’t seem to be getting less weird.... I have noticed with my clients that anxiety has been fluctuating and this is a post to let you know that if yours is doing the same it’s totally ok and completely normal. Here’s one of my favourite grounding techniques to help bring that anxiety down: Hand on heart Place your hand over your heart and either keep it there or rub around slowly in circles. Take note of the temperature of your hand as you breathe slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth. Feel the pressure of your hand on your chest and as you breathe, breathe deeper into your belly pushing out your belly button as far as it will go. If your head is racing acknowledge the racing and repeat to yourself ‘I feel really anxious and mentally chaotic but I know I am physically safe’. Repeat out loud 3-5 times as you breathe in and out. This helps to send the message to your brain that you are safe which calms down the fight, flight, freeze response which is activated when you feel anxious. If you get the message to your brain that you are physically safe it starts to quieten that noise down in your head. For more grounding techniques please get in touch. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a resultant coping mechanism following a significant trauma. It is also often accompanied by anxiety too. A neat trick that I learned from someone with OCD where it honours the need to check things repeatedly but incorporates a new coping mechanism is to take photos of the things you fear are left on so you can refer to the photos without having to do multiple checks of the same things in person.
