In every new assessment, I always ask what a person’s biggest functional limitation is. If I had a dollar for every womxn that said, putting on a bra, well, I’d probably have enough money to buy every lady reading this the new front-zip catalyst bra from @knixwear! I could hardly wait to try it this morning on my bike, and I can confidently say it is my favourite bra yet. I R O N M A N (ish). At this point in the summer, I was planning on starting to taper my training to be ready for Ironman Mont Tremblant in a couple of weeks. . Instead, my run/bike fitness has turned into phit it in mental health breaks, swimming has turned into lucky invites to neighboring pools to cool off, and what really gets my heart rate up is chasing three kiddos on rollerblades. .... Summer plans have morphed for all of us and while I still get the blues that 2020 wasn’t MY year in the way I thought it might be - I’m cool with it being OUR year in the way it might never be again. . All sweat is created equal. I’m moving my body, feeling the sun on my face, pushing through challenges and doing something that felt near impossible a few months ago; full-time kids and full-time business. This is my Ironman 2020. We are all friggin’ Ironman! . Mid-back attack. To follow-up on my post from last week (core + hammies) this is another sequence of activation/mobilization that I love - this time its for the mid-back. . This is an area of stiffness for many people. Some experience it as neck or low back pain, some feel it directly in the mid-back. However you slice it, working on stability/mobility around the shoulder blade paired with rotation through the mid-back is usually a winning combo. .... This video is sped-up, so slow it down. When in plank position you are working to move the rib cage toward and away from the shoulder blade. When you are twisting, you are using the arm to drive motion through the mid-back. . A few minutes on each side can make the world of difference. We got this set off kijiji for $50 as a Christmas gift for the kids. She wasn’t pretty, but we saw her potential. A few coats of paint and a few signature rainbows and she is better than new. .... Bonus: since our kids lived in the city most of their lives, in a small yard, they still think this is the park . . h a m m i e s + c o r e But first, a metaphor. . You know when you go grocery shopping and you make the conscious, but poor decision to try to carry all the grocery bags in the house in one trip? Ya, me too. You load every piece of real estate on your arms and hands, contort your fingers and wrists, and stumble your over-loaded body to the house. Now imagine someone came to offer you help, but their help came in the form of fanning your sweating forehead and shouting inspir...ational quotes your way. Sure, I suppose it would provide some help, but their efforts would be much better directed at grabbing a few of the bags and lightening your load. . Well, for many - those tight hamstrings are just overworked muscles working very hard to stabilize the pelvis, while the core drinks a margarita from across the room. . A great way to release the tension in the hamstrings is to get the core to start sharing the load. This was a very long-winded way to explain why I love reciprocal exercises like this one; activation of core alternating with lengthening of hamstrings. . I have sped-up the video, so go slow and give this a try, you should notice with each pass those hamstrings feel looser. . When we all closed, the trees were bare, the air was cold and the horizon was desolate. Although we open with apprehension, the world is green, the birds are chirping and life has returned all around us. It truly is a fresh start, not a return to what we left. . I have no doubt this is the beginning of a whole new horizon for our profession and our broader health care system. T O U C H. As physiotherapists (and all health practitioners) we touch people. It’s only part of what we do, but it’s a pretty magical part of what we do. . You see, touch transcends the physical body. It speaks it’s own language; it gives comfort, it provides healing, it expresses empathy and it elicits hope. .... ‘Touch’ is a bit of a naughty word these days. We have come to equate it with fear. I cannot express how important it is that we not become a society that fears touch, contact and human connection. Allied Health professionals are the BEST people to bridge the gap of staying safe and prudent during a global pandemic while also facilitating touch, health, wellness and connection. . Our waiting lists are FULL of people that so desperately need this exact connection. They are surviving but not thriving. Virtual care is amazing and an incredible innovation, but it is not for everybody or every Body. . It is so important for our leaders to understand our value in society - particularly this society that is paralyzed with fear and anxiety. M O M B O D. Mother’s Day might be over, but the realities of our postpartum body are here to stay! . I delivered all my babies via c-section, the last of which was four years ago. I continue to need to work on my scar tissue. It ebbs and flows with hormones and fitness level, stress, all the things that can affect tissue....so the work continues now, and for many, many years to come. There is no end point, but that isn’t to say I’m not highly functional and pain-free. It’...s just an acknowledgement that we like to be in a headspace that if we work on our bodies that at some point we will be done. Nah, friend - it’s a lifelong process and when you realize that, you can let go of all the expectations of where you are supposed to be. . @mom.bod.love had a lovely post last week expressing much the same about pelvic floor, and I couldn’t agree more. .
