HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM US ALL AT THE POPLAR HILL & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB! The world is really stressful for so many in our community right now and without the usual support, there are many lonely people, some even surrounded by family Give thanks and make someone's Thanksgiving be special. Sometimes, the best way to help someone is to just be near them.

On the August 11 Executive meeting, Bill Winegard, lead consultant of Municipal Strategic Planning Associates, kindly spoke to the club about his role in the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan for the municipality. The development of this plan relies on input from the community and we have been encouraged to participate in the Middlesex Centre Community Survey of Issues & Priorities by clicking on this link. . . https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MC_Community_Survey_2020 Each member of the community is asked to contribute the one thing they feel important to help shape our future. Please read our Mayor Aina DeViets message on the page and help make our future community a better one.

We might not be smack bang in the public eye at the moment but the Poplar Hill & District Lions Club are working in the background to support our community. L-R: Captain of the ship Lion Rick Castle stands with Lions Ian MacDonald and Jerry Bergsma at the brand new Hillbilly float being built. Much bigger and better the previous vessels, there is sure to be a Queen at the launch of this champagne smashing beauty! But being No.1 of the world like the previous float will be a hard act to follow.

The food drives continue. Wednesday evenings in Parkhill and Thursday evenings in Lucan. Last week Poplar Hill Lion Ian MacDonald set a sign out at the road in Parkhill. People kept coming all evening for a good collection. This week, he arrived about 15 minutes early and had 5 donations by 7pm. One person came at 8:30 as he was packing up. She said shell see him next week for sure. Over 200 kg of food was collected, making it well worthwhile.... Two of the younger children donors and Mom and Dad cycled over with them in tow. They then went for a tour of the fire engines that were out for their regular check-over. Thanks to the fire-men who provide entertainment making it doubly rewarding for the donors.

To the far right is Lion Earl Crisp, our President at the time of Trivia. We thank Lion Earl for his Presidency through these difficult times! In the background, the Poplar Hill Lions Club has still operated on a smaller scale and remotely. Well be back on a larger scale as it become safer to socialize. Be safe everyone!

The funeral for Cynthia Barnard (Greywolf) is today Monday May 25 from Dennings in Strathroy. Past and present Scouts and leaders from the area and from the wider Great Lakes Region are forming an honour guard between Dennings funeral home and poplar Hill Cemetery to show respect and appreciation for Cynthia. The Poplar Hill Lions have been invited to take part. The attached email (below) from Dale Hoose outlines the online funeral service and the honour guard. The Polar ...Hill Lions will support Lion George and his family as well as to honour Cynthia. Poplar Hill Lions held the Charter ie: sponsored the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers in Poplar Hill for well over 20 years where Cynthia was not only a leader but also played a major roll in the group committee and was part of the greater Scouting movement. ================ Elise Cooper and Kelly Fleming have come up with a fantastic idea to honour Cynthia Barnard (Greywolf) prior to her funeral Monday May 25. From Kelly: As we all know of Cynthias passing I had another member of Scouting reach out and ask about a procession of honour. Monday May 25th 2020 12:45pm Elise has reached out to Dennings to confirm and started the ball rolling and I am sharing with the group. Any Scouting members, past or present who would like to send Grey Wolf off to rest can stand along Metcalfe St heading towards Poplar Hill Cemetery (sorry unsure of street name for the cemetery if that is closer to you). The funeral coach will le ave the funeral home (Dennings Strathroy) at 12:50 to be at the cemetery for 1:20. If you would like to take part we suggest to be along the route for 12:45. Remember to maintain 2m social distancing. Any questions I will try to answer or get them. Kelly Fleming My suggestion is that participants space out at least three car lengths not only to facilitate social distancing and to avoid the appearance of a gathering but also to make the Procession of Honour longer. Uniforms are of course welcome but if your uniform days are long behind you could wear a neckerchief if you have one. People spaced out leading out of Strathroy on Metcalfe St. will be a thing to see. At the Poplar Hill end of the journey the best place to stand would be alongside Ilderton Road outside Poplar Hill Park. Current Cubs and Scouts and families are welcome. Please remember proper social distancing. Apologies to those who receive this twice or more. Thanks again to Kelly and Elise and anyone else involved in coming up with this idea. Yours in Scouting, Dale Hoose

Lion Barney Lawn has also been an important part of the Poplar Hill Lions team, having served as President, Membership Chair and until this year, head of the Trivia Challenge committee. Over the years, Barney would miss meetings at times and disappear on business in the far north. Now we have him full time, although we know he will be putting his family first and enjoying much of his fee time for other pursuits. For his retirement, Lion Barneys wife Cathy organized a surpri...se party. Cathy contacted all his friends, relatives, co-workers and the Poplar Hill Lions for a Drive-by party. All lined up in cars, at 2pm Cathy got Barney out on his front lawn as the cavalcade drove by with horns blaring. Each one slowed down and shouted CONGRATULATIONS (at a distance). In all, there were over 45 cars and an estimated 74 people who attended the party. It was a complete surprise for Barney - well done Cathy. Although not everyone could make, it showed the wealth of friends Barney has earned over the years. Thanks to Lion Ian for the article from our great Bulletin. See more
