Now that's more like it! The response to my "We need kids books" post has been so overwhelming, I've had to ask people to wait till next week to bring in more. Over the next few days I'll be featuring some of the highlights, and boy are there highlights!
On Sunday there was a local band playing classic rock at the market behind city hall, and I could hear them in my apartment. Two things came to mind: 1) I can happily say I've had my life's fill of classic 60's and 70's rock. 2) That does NOT include The Beatles. I still feel a little thrill every time I start listening to side 2 of Abbey Road, and that's the truth with the rest of their music. ... Anyway, NEW BEATLES BOOKS! See more
Children's books needed! After a busy summer we are really running low on children's books, especially titles for toddlers and younger school-aged kids. Usually we're bursting at the seams and ready for the Christmas season after a couple visits to the Library book sale, but not this year of course. Bring your quality children's books in for credit or cash anytime, and have a wonderful weekend!
These township histories are so rare they're practically a rumour. This hardcover copy is in like-new condition and you'll find it in the Local History section at Phoenix Books!
I know, muscle car season is almost over and your pride and joy is under a tarp in a garage somewhere or it's headed there soon. So what better way to spend time before you're back on the open road pressing the LOUD pedal, than with this celebration of Detroit Iron?
At Phoenix Books, novels by Louise Penny are like the perfect house guest. They're great company and I love having them, but they're never here for long. And they don't steal the silverware!
With a new influx of talent, our Entertainment section is almost overflowing with great titles!
What to do when your wanderlust can't be satisfied? Escape into the wonderful world of travel writing!
There's no need to compliment me on my stellar camera skills, just come in and pick out one of these new additions to our Planes, Trains, and Automobiles section. And boats and tractors.
It's autumn at Phoenix Books!
Old classics and new Classics are in the Children's section at Phoenix Books!
Putting together a jigsaw puzzle is a great way to spend a cold and rainy autumn day but we're running a bit short. If you have any complete puzzles in great condition, bring them in to Phoenix Books for a credit you can use on your next purchase. Thanks, have a wonderful day everyone!
In the early hours just after midnight on Easter Sunday 1917, Vimy Ridge was known as the graveyard of the British Empire. An absolutely impregnable fortress, the German stronghold had resisted numerous attacks by British and French forces, resulting in the death of 150,000 young men. That doesn't include the tens of thousands of young German men who died defending it. Just a few hours later in the morning, except for a small German stronghold on the edge of the ridge, called The Pimple, the ridge was completely under Canadian boots and The Canadian Corp had cemented it's reputation as the finest force on the Western Front. This is Canadian icon Pierre Berton's masterful account of this titanic battle and it's in stock at Phoenix Books.
The first fallen leaf of the season.
This is just a fraction of the exciting new titles at Phoenix Books!
I no longer sell Spam(well, maybe a bit of Spam), I'm fresh out of Lupins, and my walk is very un-silly. But I do have this.
We've had an amazingly successful summer thanks to the great people of Owen Sound and Grey-Bruce, as well as out of town visitors! The result is WE NEED BOOKS! Of course books of all types are welcome but here are the sections where we're really getting thin: Horror, especially Stephen King Planes Trains Automobiles & and any other motorized vehicles... Sci Fi and Fantasy SCI FI AND FANTASY Did I mention Sci Fi and Fantasy? General Fiction General and Canadian History Children's books, especially classic fiction(Anne of Green Gables etc) Sports and Adventure Romantic Fiction Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!
It's been almost 35 years since everyone's favourite trouble maker and his best pal Hobbes started making us laugh and we haven't stopped yet. Hurry, this won't be around for long!
Chris Hedges is a former Pulitzer Prize- winning New York Times journalist. His current beat is chronicalling the moral, social, and economic decay of the United States. In this, his most recent book, he convincingly explains why he believes the current chaos in the US is nothing but a preview of the nightmare to come. This is definitely not care-free summer reading but it is an important book to read and I highly recommend it.
The epitome of fine literature when I was a kid, these 70's era MAD books will be great nostalgic summer reading. Just hurry though before Roger Kaputnick and Harold Plotz take them all.
Defiance is the almost unbelievable story of the Jewish brothers who not only waged a successful guerilla campaign against the German Army, but also kept several thousand Jews safe in secret encampments deep in the forests of modern-day Belarus. This is a must-read for any history buff and it's in stock at Phoenix Books!
This is from my own collection at home. So if the clerk at one of the best-known bookstore's in the world asks if you want your book stamped, how would you answer? I've always believed a good bookstore should look, at least a little, like your well-read Grandparent's attic. Shakespeare and Company understand that perfectly.
This highly-touted rookie is the newest member of the Argyle Sox!
A book about your favourite musical act is a great way to pass a rainy summer day!
With a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, this might just be the book of the century so far, and it's in stock at Phoenix Books!
Struth, our philosophy section's a real corker, Bruce!
We have lots of new romantic fiction published in 2019/20!
I think my love affair with brightly coloured argyle socks might be getting out of hand. Last night, just out of curiosity, I counted and I have 27 pairs!
In my opinion, Stephen Hunter is the best writer of action thrillers on the planet. We have two of his best at Phoenix Books!
I think this is Stephen King's best book since The Stand.
Our cookbook section is full, stuffed, fit to bust! It's 'unbutton it's pants, groan, and say something like "time to let the whale out of the tank" while embarrassing the in-laws' kind of full.
Phoenix needs Books! We've been very busy since we re-opened (THANK YOU!), so now we need books! Of course you can return any book you buy here for 50% credit, but we're looking for new titles as well, in all of our categories. Thanks and have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Happy Canada Day everyone!
When it comes to striking a balance between accurate, detailed reporting and readability, Antony Beevor stands alone. This account of the horrific, desperate final days of the Nazi Empire in the east is one of his finest.
Thank you Grey Bruce residents! Our return from lock-down, even with the usual tourist hordes missing, has been a great success! I'm proud of our local residents for stepping up and supporting downtown businesses; it means the world to all of us!
Elizabeth Kolbert, Bill Bryson, Stephen Jay Gould, and Stephen Hawking, are just a few of the great scientific minds here at Phoenix Books!
Travel is... tricky these days. The next best thing might be a great book from our heavily stocked travel section! Plus, you don't need a passport!
9 out of ten doctors say Archie comics are the cure for childhood boredom on a rainy summer day. Fill your prescription at Phoenix Books today!
We have a wide range of fantastic books from the music world!
76 years ago today, 156,000 young men were facing the longest day.
We have plenty of great bestsellers from 2019 and even a few from this year!
Truly a classic for those who choose to walk softly on the earth.
I dunno, is my love for travel literature getting out of hand? WW2 history buffs will recognize the name Tarawa but it's currently known as Kiribati. Author Maarten Troost just calls it The Worst Place in the World.
As always, there are plenty of treasures to be found in our favourite section!
