Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is used predominately in the treatment of chronic pain conditions of the musculoskeletal system where there is no obvious sign of injury or inflammation. The technique involves dry needling of the affected muscles tissue or along the spine where nerve roots may have become hypersensitive and irritated. When the affected tissue has been stimulated it responds with a contraction. This contraction has three therapeutic effects. The first is a ...lengthening of the sensitive muscle. The second is an influx of circulation to the microscopic area of injury. And finally, the needle creates an electrical potential within the muscle that allows the nerve to fire normally again. IMS can be a painful application but its success at effectively managing pain conditions is proven! This service is covered by insurance and we direct bill! #sprucegrove #stonyplain #parklandcounty #IMS #dryneedling #physiotherapy #therapeutic #phoenixphysicaltherapy #selfcare

Check out some of the main benefits of bike riding! Now that it’s warming outside, it’s a great time to pull out the bike. 1. It's easy on the joints. When you sit on a bike, you put your weight on a pair of bones in the pelvis called the ischial tuberosities, unlike walking, when you put your weight on your legs. "That makes it good for anyone with joint pain or age-related stiffness," says Dr. Safran-Norton. 2. Pushing pedals provides an aerobic workout. That's great for yo...ur heart, brain, and blood vessels. Aerobic exercise also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's feel-good chemicalswhich may make you feel young at heart. 3. Cycling builds muscle. In the power phase of pedaling (the downstroke), you use the gluteus muscles in the buttocks, the quadriceps in the thighs, and the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in the calves. In the recovery phase (backstroke, up-stroke, and overstroke), you use the hamstrings in the back of the thighs and the flexor muscles in the front of the hips. Cycling works other muscles, too. You use abdominal muscles to balance and stay upright, and you use your arm and shoulder muscles to hold the handlebars and steer. 4. It helps with everyday activities. "The benefits carry over to balance, walking, standing, endurance, and stair climbing," says Dr. Safran-Norton. 5. Pedaling builds bone. Resistance activities, such as pushing pedals, pull on the muscles, and then the muscles pull on the bone, which increases bone density.

Here are some tips to help avoid pain while you start gardening this season. Be sure to book an online Physiotherapy session if you are having pain with this activity. Book online at Phoenixphysicaltherapy.ca 1. Warm up before you start. Go for a nice walk around the block or do some gentle exercises... 2. Always make sure to bend with your knees. I know you have heard it time and time again, but this is very important to keep the strain off your lower back. 3. Contract your abdomen/core muscles. This helps to keep the back stable. 4. Keep objects close to your body when lifting. 5. Don’t bend over to work on plants in the ground. Squat with bent knees or even kneel. You can even use knee pads to reduce knee discomfort from kneeling for long periods. 6. Avoid and sudden twisting motions. Try to use body weight to either pull or push in a straight direction. 7. Try to do areas of your garden at time. Spacing it out so you have more rest time in between sessions. 8. Take breaks. Take a walk, sit down or rest while gardening. See more
