This past weekend I was invited to be apart of a women’s business retreat that @heatherboersma organized out in the whiteshell. It was such an impacting time of vulnerability, tears and rich words spoken. These girls bravely showed up, shared openly, laughed recklessly and loved each other with open arms. Can I just tell you something my daughters before the world tries to convince you otherwise? Today and especially on your worst days, I declare that you get to be yourself with me. The family dinner table will be a safe place for you to wonder, to question, to be creative and confrontational. Even on days when you don’t say a word, the floor, and my heart, are still yours. Because you have room to grow here. Along the way, you’re going to have good hair days and then times wh...en nothing seems to fit the way you want it to, but beauty can’t be washed off, grown out of, or covered up. It’s yours for keeps. You’re going to ace some tests that will make us dance in the kitchen to celebrate. I’ll stick that A+ paper on the fridge door with a high five. But you’re also going fail and even then I will always, always still leave a space on the fridge for that F. Because to me, you are brilliant. And you’ll learn more from the hard stuff, anyway. What if we raise our kids like it was the 90’s? Where we passed notes to each other to communicate? Dropped a letter in the mailbox. Our biggest concern was finding out when the neighbourhood kids were meeting to play hockey at the rink. We rode horses before it got dark and played Double Dutch at recess. There is something so sweet about the simplicity of childhood. Where it was okay to be bored because then you would truly come up with something incredible to do. Forts were... built in living rooms and backyards and imaginations ran wild without a battery. Memories were made from sun up to sun down. The screens weren’t an option and we didn’t miss out on anything because life was happening all around us. The best part is that it still is.
