I spent a rainy morning with Ben, a 92 year old retired rancher who has lived his whole life in the Oyen area. As a young boy, he rode on horseback to visit his childhood friends who grew up in this house. Ben is a walking history book. A unique man who can unlock the past if you simply ask. A swell guy.
A cattle rancher his whole life, Roger is one tough SOB. He's rough as sandpaper and kills his cigarettes in the palm of his hand. In a soft gravely voice, Roger recalled the life of Avery Stewart, a hulk of a man who built and lived in this tiny homestead, now in its twilight years. This is part of an ongoing project about dying homesteads and the people who lived in them.
...dust to dust.
87 year old Ron Thorson and his childhood home. We sat together in the twisted sitting room while he recalled many childhood memories. Afterwards we shared a beer. What a privilege it was to share this day with him.
Built in 1912, Jim Enright bought the homestead from the Welch family in 1919. To be continued...
I've noticed the light beginning to change as we shift into autumn. As with the light, the mood changes. My favourite time of year.
Twilight years, surrounded by love.
Couldn't get this image out of my head all week. Had to go back and get it before the wheat field and house were gone. A lonely cry from a distant coyote pierced the silence.
Amazing spot to capture already, even without the heavenly backdrop. That was a pleasant surprise.
