Visit PhysioD’s instagram profile for information about Pelvic Health and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: What is the role of pelvic floor muscles? How do I know if I need pelvic floor physiotherapy?

PhysioD 23.12.2020

One of the most commonly overlooked causes of lower back pain is pelvic floor dysfunction. Studies suggest that most people with lower back pain suffer from a substantial amount of pelvic floor conditions compared to those without any lower back pain, because the pelvic floor is a key support for thelower back. Studies show that, for many, physiotherapy and home exercises can help alleviate lower back pains that are associated with pelvic floor dysfunction, by reducing the tension and/or increasing the strength of the pelvic floor. A spasm in the lower back that does not get better with most stretches, or a pain that feels deeper and is harder to locate often needs to be looked at by a pelvic floor physiotherapist.

Any of the following symptoms can be related to a pelvic floor muscle imbalance (higher tension, lesser strength or both) and can be addressed by physiotherapy: Pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, lower back, or hips... Erectile dysfunction or pain during intercourse Leaking urine with laugh, cough or sneeze Constantly feeling the urge to go to the washroom Frequently waking up at night to go to the washroom Finding it difficult to empty the bladder or bowel A bulge in the vagina or rectum (or a feeling of heaviness)

PhysioD follows evidence-based protocols for an inclusive practice and always appreciates finding opportunities to learn more about specific concerns of the LGBTQ community. I have attended courses to learn more about best practices and inclusive care and recognize that there is limited access to quality and inclusive care for transgender community, so I offer a complimentary initial assessment session to transgender individuals, to familiarize myself with their needs and improve the quality of my treatment.
