It's very commonto hear people say, "can you fix me". Fix my shoulder, fix my neck, fix my knee etc. It may not seem important but changing our language can make a significant impact on a person's recovery. First of all, fixing something implies it'sbroken. And that's rarely the case in outpatient settings. A broken back is much different than a low back sprain. A broken knee cap is much different than patellofemoral pain. Secondly, fixing something is usually a passi...ve process and rarely involves the patient doing anything. For example, you usually (and hopefully) don't participate in a surgery to fix your broken bone. Thirdly, fixing something sometimes implies that if someone's shoulder is "fixed", they no longer have to worry about doing anything. That's also unfortunately not true. As a Physiotherapist, I can't "fix" anyone. I'm not a surgeon that can repair a broken bone or suture up a wound. However, I can definitely guide someone. Having a guide is a shared process where you are (ideally) an active participant. As a guide I can advise you on what movements to do, what not to do, and what to look out for as your body "fixes" itself. Guidance is also longer lasting than "fixing" because guidance provides strategies and knowledge that can be used in the future. Ultimately, the body is designed to repair itself from most injuries, it doesn't need fixing, it needs guidance. Congrats if you read this far, I don't usually write this much Prevent. Promote.
