I have the pleasure of working with some of the hardest working kiddos and this wee lass is no exception. We’ve been at it five days a week for two weeks now and she is a rockstar. Working on upper extremity weight-bearing isn’t always enjoyable (how much do YOU enjoy push-ups?); as you can see with M, even some of the toughest exercises can bring us joy. Ive been providing home visits to kids for over six years and while I am looking forward to providing care in the beautiful space that will be Hamilton Kids Physio, there are certain things I will miss like my canine and feline friends. Ive been visiting Apollos house for nearly three years and this is what i arrived to this afternoon. Most sessions he comes by for some purr-producing scratches. Sometimes I am certain the animals think I am there to pay attention only ...to them. Fionn, one of the best dogs ever, used to park himself directly in front of me during sessions with his human sister. Its difficult to avoid getting licked in the face when youre eye to eye with a dog that is part Great Pyrenees. Since resuming in-person visits one thing has been clear: quarantine has had a significant impact on the kids I work with (and their families). Some arent sleeping well, some are having regular inexplicable meltdowns and some are just not seeming like themselves. One of my hardest workers had a really difficult session on Saturday. She had been struggling before my arrival with no real rhyme or reason and for most of the session . That said, despite the difficulty ...that has been COVID, I must share that this fierce little warrior I am blessed to work with took TWO independent steps in spite of what else she was dealing with. When I first met this beautiful girl the slightest disturbance to her balance, even in sitting, caused fear and panic. It was hard for her to fight her anxiety but within a few sessions she started to show what she was capable of and began to believe in herself. Now this: independently climbing stairs. Currently enjoying a webinar from Pivot Dancer on assessment and treatment of dancers and artistic athletes. In a 12 month period, 95% of the dancing population experiences musculoskeletal pain. Dancers haves higher pain thresholds and tolerance than non-dancers.
