Safety Tips For This Frigid Forecast Staying safe and active during this extreme weather is a challenge! Today we wanted to go over a few safety tips for success in the snow Physical activity is still important throughout these winter months to help keep us healthy and happy. Outdoor walks are a great way to keep moving and enjoy the sunshine we've been seeing lately ... How to dress for outdoor activities: Several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing instead of one single heavy layer Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent Wear a hat, mittens (not gloves), and sturdy waterproof boots to protect your arms, legs, hands and feet Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs during those really cold days When working or exercising outside be sure to protect yourself from cold-related illnesses like: Frostbite= the freezing of the skin and body tissue Symptoms- Loss of feeling and white/pale appearance in extremities (I.e fingers, toes, earlobes, face, and tip of nose) Treatment- Get into a warm location and cover exposed skin without rubbing affected area. Seek medical attention immediately. Hypothermia= abnormally low body temperature that can be life-threatening Symptoms Shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, and slurred speech. Treatment If a person's temperature is below 95, seek medical attention immediately and get to a warm location. Warm the center of the body first by wrapping the person in blankets or giving them warm, non-alcoholic beverages Lastly don't forget to HYDRATE Cold weather can have us reaching for coffee or tea more often. It is just as important to drink water regularly in the winter. Don't forget that having enough water throughout the day can remove fatigue, improve digestion, keep joints moving well and improve skin and sleep quality. Let's all stay safe and warm this week! #physiomedalliston #physiotherapy #chiropractic #chiropody #massage #physiomed #wellness #orthotics #extremecold #hydrate #staysafe #outdooractivities #hypothermia #frostbite #dressfortheweather #winter #ontario

Introducing DANTE Dante is the latest addition to our physiotherapy team. Dante graduated from the University of Guelph Humber and has been aregistered Kinesiologist for the past 4 years. ... Like many of us who’ve decided to pursue a career in Kinesiology, Dante started out with just a love of sports. One of his favorite sports to play is soccer. He started playing as a kid up until high school, but once he started his undergraduate degree, weight training became his primary form of physical activity. One thing most people don't know about Dante is he is a self proclaimed "huge nerd". He feels just as comfortable sitting at his desk playing video games for hours as he does lifting weights (sometimes more). Dante will be taking over the 10-6 kin shift while Matt goes back to school for massage therapy. Come say hi to Dante next time you're in!

Snow Removal Safety Good morning winter warriors! Today with the impending snow storm we thought it best to review proper shoveling technique and the risks and signs of over exertion or injury. Our first slide summarizes the basics of ergonomic shoveling. ... Most ergonomic shovels are 4 feet in length, if you are taller look for a shovel that is 4.5 feet to reduce strain on the back Bend at the knees to lower yourself as you scoop the snow under the shovel then push through the legs to lift your body and the full shovel Rotate with the feet or walk and tilt the shovel to dump the snow Chop snow that is over 1 foot into smaller amounts before trying to lift it use a metal shovel if possible to break ice chunks into smaller pieces Do not bend OR lift with low back Do not use a shovel that is too small Do not rotate through the knees or low back Do not throw snow away from you or behind back Do not overload shovel with snow especially when it is wet The most common injuries when shovelling stem from slip and falls, overexertion, hypothermia, and improper use of a shovel. Our second slide shows some common signs of overexertion to watch out for. Also consider: Wearing boots with good tread and using extra caution when icy Staying hydrated Monitoring yourself for signs of fatigue, shortness of breath, or muscle soreness and stopping if you have them Dressing warmly with layers Taking breaks often Not throwing snow overhead or leaning against shovel as you push to avoid falls We hope you all stay safe and warm over the next few days #physiomedalliston #physiotherapy #chiropractic #chiropody #massage #physiomed #wellness #orthotics #snowremoval #shovellingsafety #ergonomicsnowshovel #hypothermia #overexertion #hearthealth #injuryprevention #ontario

#Repost @drstephaniejuffs @download.ins --- MYTH: Did you know having "perfect posture" at work to prevent neck and back pain is a bit of a myth?? ... Research has shown people with "poor posture" get back and neck pain at the same rates as those with "good posture". So what's the culprit? Research says it's holding the SAME posture. It's not necessarily the "slouchy" posture itself that causes your pain, it's because you haven't switched out of it. Remember: you can't sit for an entire 8 hour workday, whether you were to slouch or sit up straight. In fact you should get moving /change postures a couple times an hour! You may have also heard that sitting is bad for you, or "sitting is the new smoking". The main concern with sitting is not the POSTURE you hold while sitting, it's the sedentary lifestyle associated with being seated all day that health care providers are concerned about. Your spine is designed to bend and twist. It is a resilient, robust and highly adaptable structure. It is capable of moving and loading in a variety of ways. Chiropractic care can help get your joints moving, and decrease your pain levels and then you have to do the heavy lifting (pun intended) to keep moving! So go ahead, slouch every once in a while. I won't tell your mother! (Just don't do it for too long.) The best posture to prevent neck and back pain is your next posture. #physiomedalliston #chiro #chiropractor #physio #physiotherapy #rehab #activerehab #activetherapy #posture #posturecorrection #posturecorrector #alliston #southsimcoe #simcoecounty

They way we feel is largly impacted by: what we eat (eat whole foods, reduce sugar, avoid processed foods and alcohol)... how much water we drink (ideal to consume 0.5 - 1oz of water for each lbs you weigh ie. 150lbs = 75-150oz or 2-4 L of water/day) how much sleep we get at night (ideally 6-8hours/night) how we are managing our stress (medition, screen time breaks, exercise) Are you recovering from an injury or a new workout routine? How many of you dedicate time daily to caring for YOU? Feeling great, recovery from a workout or injury, managing stress, and good health all depend on self care! As we head back to "normal" and our pace of life picks up with fun summer activities, busy weekends, and work... the need for self care increases.... Our kiddos need it too!!! No school doesn't = less need for sleep. Their growth and development, not to mention mood, depend on good sleep. Top on this list is getting 7-8 hours sleep, adequate water intake (drink your body weight in oz - ++ on hot days), exercise, and nutrition! What areas are lacking in your day? How long should you wait to seek treatment after an injury? Don't wait! We always suggest getting any injury checked out as soon as possible. But if you have a nagging pain that comes and goes, or are not sure if it will just "go away on it's own" here are some important signs that suggest Physiotherapy and/or Chiropractic therapy is required for your condition.... 1. If you have severe pain that lasts 3 days - come and get it checked asap. 2. If your pain comes and goes and seems to be coming more frequently, is getting worse in intensity when it comes, or is taking longer to go away. 3. If you have had a traumatic injury, strength and stability are always compromised. Getting an expert opinion how to rehab, strengthen, and prevent reoccurance of injury is key. 4. Something has felt "different" since your injury - this seems like common sense, but many try to ignore this feeling. If things don’t feel right, chances are they aren’t. 5. Your pain comes on with a specific movement or position - this may look something like this: every time I reach/bend/move/sit this way I get pain. Your injury has affected something very specific, and unless you want to keep avoiding that particular movement, get assessed! 6. You are moving differently since your injury - this is compensating for something that isn't happy! If you are not sure you are doing this, ask close family or a friend to spot if you are walking, bending or reaching differently. When in doubt, a consultation is always best. The longer you wait, the harder it can be to break bad habits. #physiotherapy #chiropractic #physiomedalliston #physiomed #activerehab #activetherapy #wellness #strength #injury #prevention #recovery #southsimcoe #alliston #newtecumseth

Introducing Lori. She is the key player behind the operations of our OHIP clinic in @stevensonhospital. Without her, Edmar would not be able to service the community with such amazing Physiotherapy services for those who need it. After working in the field of structural engineering for 13 years as an Engineering Technologist, Lori decided to pursue the field of Kinesiology. She attended York University and obtained a BA with a double major in Kinesiology and Psychology. Lori ...has a passion for how things go together to perform function. Our bodies are similar to engineering concepts by how our bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work. When these are not working properly we can identify the issues and actively rehab to make our bodies function better. In highschool Lori was a cross country runner, cheerleader, soccer player, and did gymnastics. Lori enjoys working with our older population to help people maintain and improve their ability to remain active. She also enjoys being sensitive to the psychological stresses that pain and recovery has on her patients. She works with them to help set recovery goals to relieve some of that stress. Lori loves working with Physiomed's Physiotherapists because they have a wealth of knowledge and experience that they share. Learning about a new technique to help our patients is so rewarding, and I am glad to expand my knowledge with them. Lori loves Physiomed Alliston because everyone is like a big family. There is an ease and welcoming nature between us all that really makes it easy to look forward to going to work. Fun Lori facts: In the winter Lori teaches downhill skiing. In the summer she rides her motorcycle every chance she gets! #physiomedalliston #physiotherapy #activerehab #ohip #activetherapy #movementismedicine #keepmoving #functionalmedicine #rehab #wellness #therapy #alliston #southsimcoe

#Repost @drstephaniejuffs @download.ins --- This is my Post-Run (and even Post-Shower) RED face after my run this morning (). The temperature dial has been turned up recently and I want to remind you of the importance of acclimating to the heat! When you exercise in warmer temperatures your body will need time to acclimate to the heat.... You can't expect to do what you were doing before! Some tips: Take frequent indoor breaks. Try out the heat an hour at a time. Use shade to your advantage. Drink fluids. Wear loose, light clothing. Reduce the intensity and length of time of exercise bouts. Exercise in the morning or evening. Be aware of dry heat vs more humid days. You won't sweat as much on dryer days and you may not realize you still need lots of fluids. On more humid days you may be very sweaty but your body may not be able to cool itself as effectively. It takes about two weeks to acclimate. Enjoy the sunshine!! #physiomedalliston #physiomed getoutside #sunshine #running #ontario #runoutside #runningmotivation #runningcommunity #alliston #runnersofinstagram #chiropractor #physicaltherapy #southsimcoe See more

Physiotherapy Month Commit To Yourself Challenge Matt (Physiotherapy Assistant - we are celebrating you this month too!) is showing us a few exercises we can do daily to move our bodies. He shows us 2 variations of the same move. One is beginner, one is advanced.... The photo series shows: 1. Beginner sit to stand and advanced single leg sit to stand. Keep core engaged (contracted and tight) and make sure your bent knee dosen't pass your toes. 2. Beginner and advanced side planks. Keep core engaged and back straight, chest up. 3. Beginner and advanced pushups. Keep core engaged, shoulders back and down, and back straight. 4. Static lunges and rear foot elevated lunges. Be sure front knee does not pass toes. Try 10-15 repetitions of each of these exercises and do 3 sets of each. Pick 2 and alternate days if doing all of them at once feels to challenging! The goal is to move your body daily! #physiotherapymonth #physiotherapy #wellnesschallenge #wellness #physiomedalliston #physiomed #movementismedicine #alliston #southsimcoe #staystrong #staywell #keepmoving

May Is Physiotherapy Month - We challenge you to Commit To Yourself! This is a great healthy snack option loaded with healthy fats and protein. #Repost @paigehawkins_wellness @download.ins ---... gluten free nut and seed crackers! FYI I can’t eat all of these alone in 4 days, so if it’s just you, try halving the recipe! ingredients: 1 cup almond flour 1/2 cup sunflower seeds 1/2 cup sesame seeds 1/2 cup chia seeds 1/4 cup flax seeds 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp sea salt 1 tbsp olive oil 1 cup water (also really yummy with some dried cranberries thrown in!) directions: add almond flour, seeds, seasoning and salt together in a large mixing bowl, stir to combine add olive oil and water and stir. Set aside for the seeds to absorb the water. preheat oven to 350 place a sheet of parchment paper on your counter space. Take half of the dough and place on the sheet. flatten the dough a bit and place another sheet of parchment paper on top. Use a rolling pin or your hands to spread the dough into a thin, even layer (make sure the shape will fit on a baking sheet). The thinner the dough=the crispier the cracker. remove top layer of parchment paper and transfer to a baking sheet. bake for 35-45 minutes, until the dough is completely dried and golden brown on top. when out of the oven, sprinkle a bit more salt on top and transfer to a cutting board, with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut the shape of cracker you want. store in air-tight container in the pantry up to 4 days. This time around, I thought I would make some sweet crackers! I made the dry base without any seasoning, and then split the dough in half, added the correct ratio of oil and water to each bowl, and in the sweet bowl I used: 1/2 banana 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp cloves 1 tbsp dried cranberries 1 tbsp ish of dark chocolate chips handful of halved raw cashews 1 tbsp coconut sugar 1 tbsp shredded coconut #nutrition #wellness #alliston #barrie #healthyliving #physiomed #physiomedalliston

It is Mental Health Week in Canada. Thanks to COVID19 isolation, many people are suffering increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Coffee may not be helping things.... Research shows that coffee doesn't cause anxiety, but it can worsen feelings of anxitey symptoms. Caffeine stimulates your "fight or flight" response and this can even trigger an anxiety attack. If you are considering reducing your coffee intake, move slowly. Sometimes quitting coffee cold turkey can worsen depression symptoms or cause headahces, fatigue, or irritability. #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthweek #getreal #physiomed #physiomedalliston #southsimcoe #wellness
