Here is a short list of the gross motor skills your toddler and young child should be able to do. (There are more, obviously). Does your child need help to figure them out? Join a club or team (when we are allowed, ). Go play different games at the park or in your yard. Build an obstacle course. Send me a DM if you have questions!... #beactive #kidsneedexercise #pediatrics #ptforkids #physioforkids #physicalliteracy #getmoving

This is known as "cephalocaudal development"! "Cephalo" means head, and "caudal" means tail. This is why you see babies developing their head and neck strength... first... then they are able to develop their arm strength to be able to push up into crawling... and this is all before their legs and feet can hold themselves up! All of these steps allow your baby to slowly work their way up against gravity to the point that they can take their own steps on their feet! It is important to remember this pattern of development as we encourage little ones' gross motor development. It is important that we encourage strengthening in the proper order... which is why we do not encourage working on standing or walking before your little one is ready!

Having increased physical literacy helps us to stay more physically active throughout life. To be physically literate, you must be able to do the following: dodge, kick, run, jump, hop, log roll, dribble a ball, balance on one foot, catch, sidearm strike, and overhand throw. When we establish this literacy in younger years, we are better able to participate in physical activities with more success. We are then also more likely to continue to participate in recreation and s...porting activities throughout life, which are excellent for physical and mental health. The best way to establish physical literacy is to ensure that your children are participating in a wide variety of activities, especially when they are younger. Try many different sports before committing to one (and don’t specialize early...more to come in a future post). #ptforkids #physioforkids #physiotherapyforkids #pediatricphysio #physiokanata #pediatrics #nationalphysiotherapymonth #physiotherapy #physicalliteracy

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) provides recommendations for the amount and types of exercise that Canadians should be doing regularly. Most Canadians aren’t active enough, and it shows in our declining mental and physical health. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is up to us. The right balance of physical activity and rest plays an important role in our overall health, well-being, and quality of life, at EVERY age. Take responsibility for YOUR OW...N health. There are many things you can do to improve and maintain your health. If you’re not sure how, consult a healthcare professional who can point you in the right direction.
