Live Online June 9th: Ingredients for Pain Care - Nutrition and Yoga Join us for Chap 10 for our book club webinar series Yoga and Science in Pain Care! Drop-ins welcome!... Replay available (lifetime access) Presented by Matt Erb Hosted by Neil Pearson, Shelly Prosko and Marlysa Sullivan through Embodia Food can either enhance or detract from health. Food carries powerful ingredients and vast information from the environment to the body. In relation to pain we know that pain biology involves neurophysiological, inflammatory, immune, and other interacting dynamics. Properties of food can be an important part of a larger recipe of ingredients that may carry direct impact on pain biology. While it is easy to say that good nutrition is an important facet to address for persons experiencing persistent pain or other health challenges, we must bridge the gap between idealism and realism. The concept of food as medicine must be mindful to not fall into preaching or privilege. Access to food and other systemic dynamics interact with each individual’s relationship with this topic. Yoga offers a framework for exploring each person’s unique makeup, history, and present relationship to food, eating, and nutrition. Next up! Wed Nov 11 - join us and chapter 3 author Dr. Matthew Taylor for our book club webinar! This is sure to be a fun and engaging way to explore pain theories and where we are in our own beliefs and where to go from there.... essential if we want to better help people in pain... The work of yoga is to discriminate between the changeable and unchangeable in Life.... In this webinar Matt shares insights into the importance of discerning between those concepts in pain care. He'll weave together how pain theories continue to evolve (changeable), how your view of the world continues to and should change, and how to use that awareness as you explore this webinar series. He will make it fun, he'll probably make fun of a few of our misperceived theories, and he welcomes your discussion at the conclusion of the webinar. Objectives for Chapter 3: 1) Have fun reviewing some pain theories and the present state of uncertainty that has become more acutely evident this year. 2) Leave with a framework to better appreciate and celebrate your present circumstances in working with yoga and pain care. 3) Be able to articulate that your ongoing creative responses are normal and fallible, and certain to change. New compilation created! Compassion and Self-Care Content and Resources: A few years ago, I created a blogpost compiling content and resources related to my work surrounding pelvic floor health and yoga. Truthfulness. As always, Dr. Gail Parker delivers some wonderful insights and perspectives. Here are some simple, yet profound key takeaways that resonated with me during her chat with Jivana Heyman last week: 1) Satya. Truth. Yes, we all know that truth is important. But dang people, there is a difference between Brutal Truth vs Compassionate Truth. We need to be discerning. ... Gail says: When about to speak, ask is it: True? Necessary? Kind? Does it improve the silence? And ask yourself: What impact do I want to have? What impact am I having? Cuz guess what, your intention may be different than the impact its actually having. mic drop. W.O.W. I think this takes awareness. Another skill we can practice and get better at. I think communication issues may partly arise from lack of awareness and perhaps differing opinions on what kindness means and looks like! 2) "Its a sacred practice to use language in a healing way, whether or not youre teaching yoga." ~Gail Parker I love the term she uses: "Skillful Use of Language And one of the descriptions of Yoga: "Yoga is Skill in Action" And Id say that Language IS a form of Action. And Id therefore deduce that Skillful Use of Language is part of Yoga - an essential part. Education around skillful use of language is a vital part of the courses I teach - language is incredibly important, including in Pain Care. It can influence outcomes and peoples pain experiences. Thank you Gail and Jivana. I thoroughly enjoyed your discussion. It is har...d." ~@mycuppajo 1 week today, we launch our book club webinar series kicking off with: Yoga and Science in Pain Care Chapter 1: The Lived Experience of Pain Join us as Joletta Belton explores this life- and self-altering aspect of pain, as well as how we can work through these changes and difficulties. It all begins with hearing and holding space for our stories. Only when we are understood as people can our pain be understood. It continues through empowering people living with pain to live well by guiding them in their search to find their own possibilities, their own meanings, their own paths. My path forward was paved with science and stories, mindfulness and movement, self-care, and compassion. What gives me such hope is that there are many paths forward. There are endless possibilities and you can help show us the way. Jo Learning Objectives for Chapter 1: - Reflect on pain as a lived experience that affects our identities and lives. - Recognize how a persons story helps to better understand their pain, which leads to better treatment paths. -Practice deep listening, without listening to formulate a response or attempt to fix.
