Frances' Physique Coach Studio 14.11.2020

The 2019 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada 6 days... 11 Countries Represented (including Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Canada) 19 Sessions 128 Canadian athletes competing over 177 individual sessions 1593 attempts taken Countless PR’s Canadian And Provincial Records Commonwealth Records World Record Totals, Squats, Bench Presses and Deadlifts Multiple Best Team and Individual Awards This was only a part of what took place in St. John’s Newfoundland this past week. In my second CPU Head Coaching position I was grateful for the team of coaches including Co-Head Coach Matt Goldsmith, with assistants Alex Groleau, Graeme Gerlach, Justin Reason and Kevin Weiss - each bringing their unique experiences and skill set to compliment one another for our coaching tasks. I came away with a mitt-full of lessons (none really new, and most reinforcing the coaching and leadership keys I’ve spent a lifetime honing). This competition posed challenges that few folks in Canada have experienced from a coaching perspective- the sheer volume of athletes amongst the entire gamut of powerlifting events (Equipped and Classic, Bench Press and 3-Lift), with nearly every category represented. We were a diverse team of experienced and newer, young and older, all seeking the very best of themselves. Although this coaching team may not have been as pressed to perform under the pressure of a World Championship, we set our standards high to meet the expectations and needs of our team and of every athlete and their respective goals. Coaching is my lifeblood. It’s my profession. It chose me at the age of 13 when I began mentoring younger basketball athletes in the Woodstock Optimist Basketball Association, and it has afforded me the opportunities to coach at levels I dreamed of: Ontario college basketball and soccer, IFBB Bodybuilding and IPF Powerlifting. I still have much to learn, and so I’ll continue to set myself up for more of these experiences, surrounding myself with more skilled coaches and continuing to lean into the challenges of coaching some of the best powerlifting athletes in the world. Thank you Canadian Powerlifting Union and thank you athletes. Thank you for your trust and your expectations, your praise and your critiques, and for your willingness to do this thing we call Powerlifting, together. A long time after we’ve forgotten the scores, we’ll remember the people. Peter Ewing, my high school basketball coach.
