Congratulations to our daughter Eleanor Kendra James who won the Primrose Prize for the best performance of a virtuoso Primrose transcription at the Primrose International Viola Competition last week in Los Angeles. We are very proud!
CORRECTION!!! Kendra has advanced to the final round of the Canadian Music Competition!!!!!
My daughter Kendra is a semi-finalist in the Canadian Music Competition in Toronto. Good Luck, Kendra!
A tuning in Richmond yielded an amazing story. It was an old upright, a Toronto made Gourlay, and I noticed while tuning that the serial number was 195, an unusually short number (five or six digits is common) signifying that it was one of the very early pianos made by that company. I asked the young lady if she knew anything of the piano’s history. It had been played by her Grandmother when she was young in Montreal; later it had moved with her to Saskatchewan. Later sti...ll it was given to the grand daughter and moved to the west coast. Grandmother is in her late eighties now, but she has always played piano often having several pianos in her home. Then came the punch line: When Her grandmother was a teenager, she would get together for jam sessions with her friend, Oscar Peterson. I had just been touching the ivories tuning the piano - that Oscar had probably played? Oscar, how I wish you were here! How I wish you could try out your magic on the newly tuned piano and remember with us those days in Montreal. See more
