Looking for ways to get involved with climate solutions on campus? The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions is excited to share the Climate Solutions Toolkit... with #UVic undergrads! Whether you're looking to build your knowledge through a new class, find a research supervisor, or get involved with a student club or organization, this online resource can help. The toolkit celebrates the people and initiatives working towards climate solutions at UVic, and makes it easier to for students to connect with these resources. We will keep adding resources to the toolkit, and welcome feedback on what you think should be included! Earlier this year we hosted the PICS Student Forum where we heard from multiple research students through Lightning Talks presentations. These researchers share...d exciting early results of some ongoing PICS projects under the overarching themes of the built and natural environment. Researcher Eric Nance from the PICS Wildfire and Carbon project shared how better quantifying the amount, and types, of wood fibre being burnt in slash piles in BC, can support a more sustainable way of managing forest ecosystems, as well as contribute to meeting provincial GHG targets. View his presentation at http://ow.ly/3ALP50CU8Eq Researcher Nicole Bates-Eamer from the PICS Climate Change Displacement Project presents the challenges British Columbia residents face due to climate change displacement. Nicole is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at University of Victoria and presented at the PICS 2020 Student Forum. View her presentation at http://ow.ly/flWH50CU8FN Researcher Maha Shehadeh from the PICS Innovations in Mobile Thermal Energy Storage Project explains how her team is developing a mobile, thermal energy storage prototype to enable transmission of waste heat from off-the-grid urban and industrial sources into the City of Surrey’s district energy system. Overall goals include reducing the city’s carbon footprint, as will as the integration of bioenergy into the system. View her presentation at http://ow.ly/OaBj50CU8Gv Researcher Ilana Judah from the PICS Adaptation Mitigation Project presents on the relationship between climate change impacts and multi-unit residential buildings, and the framework she is developing to integrate climate adaptation and mitigation solutions in their design, construction and operations. Buildings and construction are responsible for approximately 40 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. View her presentation at http://ow.ly/OJgD50CU8H6 Researcher Garrett Therrien from the PICS Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Solutions for Municipalities Project discusses the challenges that communities face in tracking carbon emissions, often due to a lack of data, and how this project will assist with solution pathways for creating effective climate action plans. View his presentation at http://ow.ly/O39b50CU8Hv Researcher Ryan Foxall from the PICS Solid Carbon Project provides an overview of the project’s ambitious goal to capture atmospheric CO2 and convert it into rock beneath the ocean floor.
