WEDNESDAY night was the First Quarter phase of the Frogs Croaking Moon. This was an auspicious time in the land of Mi’kma’ki, the time of the Spring Feast at Am...atu’kati (now Point Pleasant Park) at the entrance to Kjipuktuk (Chebucto, or Halifax Harbour). Mi’kmaq from all over would journey far to join this feast. This was the great social event of the year. There is very much more to the story: The history of the Mi’kmaw presence in Kjipuktuk is complex and rife with conflict with European settlers. The Spring Feast is no longer observed but Amatu’kati remains a deeply spiritual place to the Mi’kmaq. Here’s a little Two Eyed Seeing: this phase of this Moon hangs high overhead at the beginning of the evening, hard to miss. Moreover, the phase (illuminated fraction) of the Moon at First Quarter changes very quickly from night to night, so it would be easy to use the shape of the Moon to gauge how early or late you were for the party. This morning in Grade 7/8, we had an amazing guest Mr. Jonathan Torrens (Street Cents, Jonovision, Trailer Park Boys) join us in our virtual classroom! Jonathan discussed the art of acting and the entertainment industry, also giving tips on how to follow your goals and to challenge yourself. The students had a chance to ask questions afterwards and talk with Jonathan. The 7/8s invited Jonathan for a smudging when the province opens up, and he said he would be honoured. Wela'liek Jonathan!
