Celebrating Diversity, Inclusion, Local, Global & Unity Glen Haven Manor’s CEO Lisa M. Smith says the staff list at Glen Haven is starting to look like a bit li...ke the United Nations and this is a source of great pride to the local nursing home. We are clearly a winning combination of local and global, she explains. Actively embracing diversity and inclusion is a key pillar of Glen Haven’s culture and as an organization we are continuously looking at ways to evolve and grow. This commitment is found through tangible day to day initiatives, attitudes and decisions as well as in the strategic priorities of Glen Haven and everyone on our team has a role to play to achieving success. In the works for several weeks, Glen Haven officially expanded its flag presentation today, which has grown from four flags to seven. Now flying regally on refurbished flag poles, locally designed and made by MacGregor’s, from the front of the building are the Canadian, Nova Scotia, New Glasgow, Commonwealth, United Nations, Transgender and Pride flags. The flags we fly are important to us as they stand for pride in our nation, province, community, our multicultural heritages and our people, adds Smith. We decided as a team to have the flags truly represent our commitment to inclusion and diversity. Often the Pride and Transgender flags are flown for a special week or event, we wanted these symbols of inclusion to be there with all of our other flags. Glen Haven held the unveiling ceremony for the new flags with members of the team standing beneath a flag which holds a special significance to each of them and as representatives of the entire Glen Haven work family. CEO Smith says it is important to demonstrate Glen Haven is a welcoming workplace and community in a variety of ways. Another initiative which has caused excitement is a newly installed Welcome Home word art at Glen Haven House which is a temporary accommodation for newcomers who join the Glen Haven team. Welcome Home graces the wall of the house, with this phrase written in 10 languages. In addition to English, these languages include French, Mi’ kmaq and Gaelic along with two African languages, Swahili and Tsonga, Arabic, Vietnamese, Filipino, Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Telugu (India) which reflect the home languages of the staff at Glen Haven. Additional languages will be added as new heritages are added. These are more than just a cliché or words for us, says Janice Jorden, Glen Haven’s Employee Relations Specialist. We want our newcomers to know that coming to Canada and to Glen Haven is the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in their lives where they will find a workplace, a home and a community that values and respects them and all that they have to offer. Smith credits the Glen Haven team in large part for its high retention rate of newcomers. Our staff have been remarkable. They have opened their arms to newcomers, whether from another community, province or from across the globe. This is more than a warm welcome, it is about embracing new colleagues and creating a sense of belonging. It has been uplifting to see our team members learn about each other’s heritages, experiences, traditions and grow stronger together. Another element of Glen Haven’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is to transform the dialogue on ageism. CEO Smith says that Glen Haven is always looking for ways to educate about elders and to assure dignity and respect. This ranges from creating opportunities to make ongoing contributions, to avoiding intentional or unintentional negative language and stereotypes, to celebrating their accomplishments and achievements, to respecting experiences and wisdom and changing biases. Everyone has the potential to grow and we all have hopes and dreams, no matter our age, she adds.
