News from the St Mary’s River Association We will work with inland fisheries on measures to educate folks on the dangers that invasive species [have] like freshwater bass and pickerel. We will also work with Canoe and Kayak Nova Scotia on growing the recreational paddling footprint within our valley. ... As well, we are currently researching a more accurate way to count Atlantic salmon within the river and will spend the year getting this right. https://www.thestar.com//smra-has-full-agenda-for-2021.html

In 1945, Chain Pickerel were illegally introduced into waterways in the Kespukwitk region (South West Nova Scotia). Over the last 75 years, these fish have cont...inued to make their way through watersheds across Mi’kma’ki (Atlantic Canada). Chain Pickerel are a problem because they quickly become a top predator in their ecosystem. They outcompete naturally occurring fish species, such as Atoqwa’su (Trout) and Species at Risk such as Plamu (Atlantic Salmon). To learn more about what Chain Pickerel look like, where you can find them, what they eat, their impacts on Species at Risk, how many you can keep when fishing, and how to use them, listen in! The Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species-at Risk Project is gathering knowledge about plamu (Atlantic salmon) in the Southern Gulf of Saint Lawrence Watershed... in order to create watershed management plans. We are seeking knowledge and stories about plamu in west, middle and east rivers of Pictou that may include: harvesting stories about plamu, locations of known plamu habitat and/or areas of concern along the river. Please contact Alanna Syliboy to participate. Email: [email protected] Phone: 902-899-6134 #mikmawconservationgroup #plamu #atlanticsalmon
