Hello everyone, As some of you already know, we have, unfortunately, lost Mr. VandeGriend to Lethbridge for next year. On behalf of Picture Butte High School, I want to thank Mr. VandeGriend for his 12 years of absolute commitment to this school and his tireless enthusiasm for the athletic programs of Picture Butte. You will be missed. While change is difficult, change is also exciting. We are thrilled to announce that we have now hired Ms. Casey Sche...idegger as our new Physical Education teacher and part of the Athletics Directors team who will now work alongside Mrs. Johnson. Some of you may know Ms. Scheidegger as a former student of PBHS, while others of you will know Ms. Scheidegger as a high level curler that is competing nationally and internationally. While both of those facts are true, the most important thing of all is that Ms. Scheidegger is an excellent teacher and comes very highly recommended into our school. Please help me in welcoming Ms. Scheidegger into our family. Finally, we would like to announce that we are going to hold a combined Athletics and Academics Awards night on June 24 starting at 6:00 for junior high followed by the senior high awards at 7:30. We are still working with AHS on a few details, but we may be able to hold our event in the gymnasium. If that option is not available, we will be hosting an outdoor event, drive in style. Either way, we will be going ahead with this event and we hope you are able to join us. Thank you to all for your great support and please contact the school if you need any questions answered or help with anything. All the best everyone, Mr. Lowe See more

June 10, 2020 - final push Hello everyone, I want to start by thanking all of you for being so great to PBHS as we tried to manage our way through this CoVid reality. You have been great in working with us to make the best of this very difficult situation. We are now very close to being done. Teachers are now at the point where no new work is being assigned and students now have the time to catch up on all missing work. Once this work is done and handed in, stu...dents are free to enjoy their well deserved summer break. The light at the end of this tunnel is near! Officially, we can accept submitted work until June 23. Teachers will then prepare final report cards that will go out before June 26. We are so grateful for your support in this time and you have made this situation much easier to manage. So far, it also looks encouraging for a return to school in the fall and we are planning for that. To that end, we are inviting all parents of students who will be in grades 10-12 to take part in our course registration process. A link is being shared with you (in this email) where you can choose the courses for your child for next year. Present Grade 10 & 11 students should have no problem filling this form in, but, If you would like assistance call the school at any time and we can walk you through this form. https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSf9Inoavbsb2jAGSy/viewform Overall, we have less than two weeks remaining and we are happy to say we have made this situation work as best as could be reasonably hoped for. Cross your fingers for a full return in the fall and we appreciate all you have done to help us help you in educating your child. All the best everyone, Mr. Lowe See more

Hello everyone, Perhaps Sundays are the best to send out announcements sometimes. We just can’t wait to share our excitement of yesterday’s event. As mentioned last week, the staff of PBHS organized a Grad Recognition Event that took place last night. The best words I can use to describe the event are cathartic, joyful and grateful.. Cathartic because it has been almost two months since we have seen a class and it was long overdue for us to interact with our stud...ents. Joyful because everyone was just so happy to be able to put the class together and have a group celebration of their success. Grateful because all students, parents and staff were just so thankful for this opportunity and this event allowed all to show their appreciation for each other. For those interested, Global News covered the event last night and will be putting together a news piece that will air Monday night on Global News local for sure and may possibly make it onto the Provincial broadcast. In other news, we are heading into the final week of May so buckle up as we finish our push to the end of the year. Teachers are reporting high levels of engagement so I want to thank our parents for helping make the best out of this situation. As always, stay safe, stay positive, and stay on course. We are almost there to the end of this school year. All the best everyone, Mr. Lowe

May 17, 2020 Hello everyone, I apologize for sending out an announcement during the long weekend, but I would like to share some important information with you. While there is a somewhat more open approach to the economy and life over the past week, the restrictions for our school system remain the same. We hope all of you are doing well and staying safe through this partial reopening period. We do have four important updates for you. First, we want t...o continue to encourage all of our students to keep their pace and spirits up. As spring is quickly turning into summer, we do not have much time left and are doing our best to work through the remaining curriculum in the best way that we have available to us. Please stick with us and we will get you through. Second, we would like to share a good news announcement concerning our Grade 12 class. The staff of PBHS is inviting all Grade 12 graduates (and their most immediate family) to a celebration of their accomplishments this coming Saturday (May 23) in the evening. We have chosen this day as it was their original date of graduation. While we will not be able to have the full ceremonies, we want to let them know we are still thinking of them and are proud of the graduation that they have all earned! Third, we are sad to announce that Mr. VanDeGriend (our PE teacher and Senior High Athletic Director) has accepted a position in Lethbridge School Division starting this fall. His contribution to staff and student culture has been tremendous and he will be sorely missed by our school. After putting in more than 10 years at PBHS, it is obvious that his departure will be greatly felt, but we wish him all the best as he moves on to the next chapter of his professional career. Fourth, I would like to let our 2020/2021 returning students know that course registrations and planning will be taking place in the last week of May and first week of June. We are preparing for several scenarios of how school might look, but please rest assured that everyone will be taken care of very well. As a small school, we are well placed to meet any changes that the fall may bring and we are committed to offering the best education possible in an environment that is safe and caring to all. Thank you everyone and I hope you are having a wonderful long weekend. Mr. Lowe See more

May 1, 2020 Hello everyone, I hope all of our families are doing well as we enter spring. Now that our system is up and running, we have made the conscious decision to reduce our contact frequency to weekly. We hope this meets with your satisfaction. Last week, you should have received a phone call, email, or text home over report cards and you have been able to look at both report card comments and marks. If this is not the case, please contact us and we will be m...ore than happy to help you through this process. This week, we are officially entering the final spring push to finish curriculum before the end of classes, originally slated for June 12. We want to thank our parents for the great buy in we have had over the past month and want to really encourage you to keep this up over the next 6 weeks. We understand that, as the weather improves, this will become more difficult but we are asking for your support to keep the focus for just a bit longer. Yesterday, the Alberta Government released its reopening strategy and we are now starting to get some clarity on our path forward. As you can likely well imagine, it is practically impossible for physical attendance at school to resume this school year. As such, our two primary focus areas right now are on trying to prevent knowledge gaps for next year and keeping our students' mental health as strong as possible. We would also like to offer out some assistance if there are any families in need. We have about $1000 in frozen groceries (primarily frozen meat) that the school will no longer be using this year. If we have families that are in need and willing to take some of this product off of the schools’ hands, please contact me and we will see what we can do. We will be giving it away on a priority needs basis. We don’t want it to go to waste so please let us know if you could benefit from this offer. In conclusion, we are in good shape to finish this year provided we can keep the focus and positive energy going for just a bit longer. Thank you everyone for your efforts so far to keep our children engaged and healthy. It is much appreciated. Mr. Lowe

April 21, 2020 Hello everyone, We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Easter. With all of the changes happening in the world, we wanted to give as much a break as possible from the demands of school. Now that school is back in session, we hope everyone is rejuvenated for the final push to the end of June. Our report cards are almost ready for release and we are planning on opening up the Parent Portal tomorrow morning at 8:30am. PBHS Staff will be cont...acting you, starting tomorrow, to assist you with viewing the virtual report cards as we are not being allowed to send a paper copy out at this moment. It is our goal that every parent will have full access to PowerSchool and report cards by the end of this week. Thank you everyone for your understanding with all of this and we look forward to connecting with you over the next few days. Mr. Lowe See more

April 7, 2020 Hello everyone, It has been a few days since I have provided an update. Sadly, I must inform our school community that we have had to lay off four of our support staff team. While not as many as was originally feared, it is hard on us regardless. We will be making plans to accommodate this loss of staff after Easter and will take every step possible to minimize any impact on our students and school community. We would also like to raise awar...eness that today is Green Shirt day in honour of the movement started by Logan Boulet. The goal of Green Shirt day is to raise awareness for organ donation which was something that Logan was passionate about. We have been collecting photos all day of staff and students wearing their best green. It is never too late if you would like to submit a photo of you and your family wearing green in support of organ donation. If you send your photo to [email protected], we will include it in a collage that we are creating. We would like to give some advance warning for parent teacher interviews (April 23) as they will take place in a different manner than normal. First, we are not allowed to send paper copies of report cards home so please expect an electronic copy prior to these interviews. Second, we will not be able to conduct live interviews in the school. We are working on a different plan and will give you more details once we figure out the best way to move forward on this. Finally, we would like you to know that it is our intention to wrap up assignments and homework so that Easter Break is a true and physical break from school. Our students have been great at getting on to this new system and we have made really good progress in covering the various courses. New work will not be expected to be completed over the holiday as we want to give all families a chance to take a collective break from the daily grind of school. We hope that this meets with your approval. I would like to finish by giving the entire school community a big thank you for the past three weeks. You have all made our jobs much easier with the great buy in and flexibility that you have all shown in making this new system work. It is much appreciated and we are thankful to have such a great school community!!! Mr. Lowe See more

April 2, 2020 Hello everyone, We have spent the past few days trying to understand and react to the government announcement on Saturday that effectively made some substantial cuts to education. There are yet to be decisions made but we can assure you that we are making decisions with the sole purpose of having the most minimal effect as possible to our students and support staff. We hope to have some updates early next week on that development. On to some good news. We s...ent out a survey to students on Tuesday and would like to share the results. We had nearly 60% of our students respond which automatically lets us know that we have at least 60% of our students actively engaged right now. Of the respondents, here are the results: In general, there are many comments about the workload being too much so our teachers are making some adjustments in that regard. Grade 8 and 9 would like more video conferencing opportunities. We are hoping to rollout a few opportunities over the next few days but are also very cognizant to not overdo this. Connections and communication from the school are solid. Our students have a significant desire to return to normal and come back to school About a third of our students feel their mood has decreased. Please contact the school if you would like some assistance with this. Almost all students are putting in between 2-6 hours a day on school work which is the intention. We are aiming for 3 hours a day of work. If your child is not in this zone, please contact your teachers to discuss this. Other big changes to the lives of our students are more free time and they are getting more sleep. From what we can tell, we are ‘threading the needle’ of trying to offer a good education to all. Please feel free to look over the actual survey results here at: https://docs.google.com//1mjVjy4ZG9vZn_biRgQ/viewanalytics As always, more updates will follow and please feel free to contact your teachers during business hours to discuss and plan for your children. All the best everyone, Mr. Lowe See more

March 30, 2020 Hello everyone, I am not sure how to start this update. Unfortunately, on Saturday, the Provincial Government came out with a surprise press release on the weekend announcing an immediate cut to a significant portion of operational expenditures. We do not know the full extent of this announcement as the Government did not make themselves available afterwards to answer many of the obvious questions that would result from such an announcement. Among other thin...gs, they did announce is that funding for educational assistants will be reduced since they are not being utilized. As you know, that is not the case at PBHS. Our educational assistants are an integral part of our new method of delivery. They were the ones to begin the communication process with all of our families on March 17 after the Government’s last weekend announcement and now they are the ones that are supporting our teachers in rolling out curriculum during these less than ideal times. To be frank, it would be a huge loss to the PBHS community if this possible direction becomes a reality. Our support staff has been an essential partner in our response to this crazy new landscape. For now, we await government clarification and we are all working towards offering the best educational delivery that we can. We ask that our parents check in with their teachers if work appears to be outstanding. Finally, if there are any out there struggling in this new environment, please let us know and we will assist you as best as we can. Take care everyone, Mr. Lowe

March 27, 2020 Hello everyone, I am happy to report that there are still no further major updates. It looks like we are settling into this new environment and things seem to be going well. We have all staff fully engaged with connecting with students to serve their learning needs. With any luck, our students have completed their tasks required for this week and now have this weekend off to relax with the family. If you have any questions or concerns, please bring them to our attention right away and we will be working through all communication as fast as possible on Monday. My next update will come out later Monday afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone, Mr. Lowe

March 25, 2020 Hello everyone, By now, all of you should have received a phone call home to check up on the progress of your children and just generally touch base. Based on these conversations, I am happy to report that there is a high level of satisfaction with regards to how PBHS is delivering education in this unprecedented time. That said, we are still striving on improving upon this model. To that end, we have been doing some experiments with video conferencing/googl...e hangouts in Grade 8, 9 and 12 classes. Once we get through a few more sessions we will give a better update as to the effectiveness of this approach to be a part of our educational delivery model for some of our classes. We also want to encourage you to communicate with us if your son/daughter is in need of help, academic or otherwise. We have seen some good successes already with students reaching out to staff for some one on one virtual support. We, as PBHS staff, are here in school from 8:30 to 3:30 for you to access and we encourage you to take advantage of this. If you feel in need of some support, please reach out and we will be happy to help you. That is it for now so take care PBHS families and please don’t hesitate to contact us for any of your needs. Have a great day, Mr. Lowe See more

March 22, 2020 I hope everyone is doing okay and is settling into our new normal. I hope your weekend has been relaxing and I thought I would give all families a one-day break from communication. Here is your update heading into this week. I have spent the weekend developing Graduation plans for all of our Grade 12’s. We will be communicating with all families/students of Grade 12 to discuss these specific plans. We will also be phoning home to ALL PARENTS to see how ev...eryone is doing and to clean up any problem areas or issues. We are hopeful that things are going well for all of our families. Finally, teachers will be pushing out more lessons and marking/assessing material that has come back in. It is our plan to move as quickly as possible right now to finish the remaining curriculum just in case school is not able to finish as scheduled in the end of June. We are sure many of you are wondering how the year will finish. Frankly, so are we. There are many possible scenarios being bantered around, but we can guarantee you that no student will be disadvantaged through this challenging time. We are doing everything in our power to make this transition as easy and seamless as possible. There is definite movement by the both the Provincial and Federal governments to increase social isolation standards and compliance. I believe it is highly likely that school staff will not be working from school much longer. Guidelines were put into place today to allow some staff to start working off site if required. We would also personally ask all of our families to pay full attention to social isolation standards. I know this is not an easy or simple request. By nature, we are social beings. I know our students want to meet up in the absence of being able to see each other at school. If at all possible, we earnestly ask you to resist that urge. If we do not all do our part in this time, loved ones will be affected and may pay the ultimate price due to a lack of commitment to the attempt to self isolate. More updates will follow, but we look forward to connecting with you by phone tomorrow as we head into this week of learning. See more

March 20, 2020 Hello everyone. As promised, things change quickly. We have good news for Grade 12 students. Students are still responsible for completing their Grade 12 core courses, but all remaining Diploma exams have been canceled. In addition, Alberta Principals have the ability to award up to 15 credits for CTS courses and work experience for any students that become unable to complete any of those courses. We will go through each Grade 12 student this weekend to a...ssess their graduation status. Overall, this is good news and should help to reduce stress of our Grade 12 students. The other main announcement that I have today is that a few of our parents have indicated that they are having trouble joining the Google classrooms. We are working with parents on this. I should note that in order to join one of these classrooms, all you need to do is accept the invitation that the teacher has sent. If you try to access the classroom with a code, this is to actually enrol as a student. Therefore, unless you wish to be graded by the teacher, we request that parents do not attempt to join the course through use of a code. :) If more information comes in, I will send out one more update. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend. Ps. Here is the link to the government announcement. https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm
